That was pretty fascinating.

I'd be interested in reading articles from past years on speculation about future technology. In 1999, what exactly did people think we'd have by 2009...?

Edit:

I did just find this rather interesting article:

Some of his predictions are pretty accurate - transmitting media over a network, the proliferation of wireless, and even small computers with no moving parts (e.g. netbooks).
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

Software wise: the reality of Mac OS X and the non-ending rumors regarding the existence of a 'Yellow Box for Windows' which would let developers build 'Universal Apps' (able to run under Mac OS and Windows).

Hardware wise: Pismo's soon and Transmeta CPU rumors were all the rage by then.

Good old Kurzweil. After explaining how most artists, musicians and instruments have been all but replaced by "cybernetic" artists, software and controllers he goes on to say:
Nonetheless, the core process of creating written language is less affected by intelligent software technologies than the visual and musical arts.
Gee, that wouldn't be because you're an author no?

And good lord how we thought virtual reality was the way of the future back then. Along with "digital assistants", which really took off with Clippy.
