Palm released an update to the Pre's software, WebOS 1.1, which reenables syncing with iTunes:
Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That's right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).
If they used the same iPod spoofing method they used the first time around I can see Apple going the legal route. It will be interesting to see how this cat and mouse game progresses.

Apple's not going to release a new version of iTunes every time Palm makes a work around. Apple will likely block it any time it does do a release.
Apple is not going to sue palm for enabling syncing. They have better things to do, like kick their ass with the iPhone.

Palm changed the USB Vendor ID (VID) to say it's a device from Apple. This violates the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) rules.
Palm also filed a complaint with USB-IF against Apple for using the VID to prevent iTunes from working with Palm's hardware. Presumably if Apple stops discriminating by VID, Palm will stop using Apple's VID.

I filed a complaint with my landlord that my rent is too high, doesn't mean its going to change.
I don't agree with what Apple is doing, but I don't think Palm has a leg to stand on.

I imagine Apple is going to keep breaking support for it. Ultimately they wouldn't prevent them from making a utility that accesses the library XML file, but trying to use iTunes for it isn't smart, and it will continue to piss off Apple... thus things will continue to break.
I think Palm will quickly put out a third party utility but they'll probably be dicks and release a Windows only version first.

I'm glad to see at least someone is trying to do something about it. Ironically, iTunes used to support many non-Apple devices.

Other devices are still capable of using iTunes. The proper way to do it is to read the XML version of the Library file. The improper way to do it is to spoof your way in.

In my opinion, Palm is being quite lame in their method. It almost seems like they're doing it on purpose to try to paint Apple as monopolistic overlords or something. As others have said, the proper way to do it is well documented and in practice by other companies. Palm knows this, but continues to do it this way. It feels like they're out for Press.
If this is true, I say **** Palm, and Apple is doing the right thing by blocking their method. Palm is being lazy and their users are suffering for it. I highly suspect that if it weren't former iPhone engineers on the Palm team this wouldn't have ever happened.

Exactly. Everyone else writes their own sync software for their devices. Even the Zune (well, Windows only, but still...). There's obviously a way to do this that Apple finds acceptable.
If I were Apple, I'd just occasionally and randomly release updates that breaks this (i.e. not every update, just enough to make it unpredictable). Just enough to keep Pre consumers distrusting Palm's sync strategy. Maybe eventually Palm would get enough pressure from their users to write their own damn software.

As others have said, Palm is trying to make Apple look bad, that's all. A lame move that will ultimately backfire.
A shame, because Apple needs competition and the new Palm looked like just the ticket.
