What sort of insect is this?

These things are flying around our house in the South West of France. They're attracted to a tree thats in flower. The father-in-law has never seen them before (he's had the property for 50 years).
It's about 1.5 inches in length. Not aggressive, so far.
I've looked up all sorts of wasp and hornet images but can't find anything, anyone?

It looks kind of like a yellowjacket to me. We used to have them all over the place in Memphis. Strange that yours aren't aggressive, though — I remember them being mean little things. (The examples on the Wikipedia page have a lot of yellow, but they come with more black too.)

I've seen one of those on our balcony (in Maryland) in the mornings almost every day this week. Freaking huge! No idea what it is, though it left me alone to eat my breakfast.

It's a Cicada Killer. Large solitary wasp. Harmless to humans.

Cheers for your replies. They're still not agressive, only come out when it hits 28/29°C and only seem to gather around one tree. We're also getting lots of hornets who love the old wood in the farmhouses. A few traps have caught their fare share.
