So Vick is a changed man. Probably wants a puppy for Christmas.

What do you think?
And how tasteful will opposing fans be? I think it might get interesting.

I can't believe my Cowboys didn't pick him up. Maybe we've finally learned our lesson.
He'll never be at the level he was before prison either. Two years behind bars is far too long away from the football field. As for being a changed man, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Most people are deserving of second chances (I exclude child molesters and murderers), especially if they've served their time.

Tasteful fans? Football? Philadelphia? These three things have never gone together.

I hear you there. When they started cheering when Michael Irvin got his career ended there I was done. That was the most tasteless sh*t I ever saw. While, I am not a Tom Brady fan (not even close! LOL) but I was hoping the guy would be okay and could comeback. I don't like to see any player get their careers ended on injury. I may hate his guts, but I have to admit the guy is one of the best QBs ever.
I don't see why the hate for Michael Vick. He's paid his debt, I hope he does well and gets it together. He's just gotten his opportunity, hopefully he makes the best of it.

Society determined a punishment and he served it. That's the end of if for me. If he plays well, then good for him. He's quite lucky to have someone like Tony Dungy to help him out. Most coming out of prison aren't that lucky. We seem to want to ostracize former criminals, but doing so only pushes them back to crime when they can't find jobs and are shunned everywhere.

To be blunt, if society determined determined a 10-year sentence was enough for a pedophile and that pedophile served it with no issues, I still wouldn't want that person living in my neighbourhood.
I would be very surprised if the fans are supportive of Vick, and quite frankly, I would have little sympathy for Vick if he got hounded out of the league.

Excellent point, but I would argue that a person can change his beliefs about dog fighting much more easily than about having sex with, or fantasizing about having sex with, children.
I think what he did is despicable, but I also think he deserves a second chance.

Being 5 min from Philly here in NJ the tasteless fans only care about him helping to get a ring. Vick is a true scumbag who hung, drowned, electrocuted, buried alive dogs. He states he has been transformed and would never hurt an animal. BULLS@#T. The only reason he is remorseful is because he got caught and is on a PR mission. The Eagles along with Reid and his drug addict kids are oblivious to the classless move they did by signing him. But all will be forgotten if he performs and helps the team win. Message to kids..do wrong and all is okay.

I am actually a bit disgusted. He killed how many dogs and whatever he did? Sounds much worse than say... betting on baseball? Who doesn't bet on baseball? Pete Rose is banned for life and a dog killer and actual law breaker is out of jail and playing football again. Something just doesn't make sense here.

The difference in the two cases is remorse. Rose refused to admit what he had done and lied about it. He was asked for an apology and refused. Vick has admitted doing wrong and is working to change his ways. Regardless of actual crime, what society in general is looking for are people who intend to change their behavior and learn from their mistakes rather than remain indignant.

Betting on baseball? You might as well ban everyone for life for everything. So many people bet on sports and don't offer remorse... so what? If I kill a person and then offer remorse, does that make it less of a crime? If I kill dogs by burying them alive and shocking them to death and beating them with bats and then say Oh, I'm So Sorry... does that mean it's okay, or what? I'm confused here.
Next, Chucky Manson is going to say I'm Sorry, and then all is forgiven. We live in a land of lollipops and unicorns. I don't think he should be playing anything anymore, not even a banjo in the hills of Kentucky.

IOW, you've never made a mistake that you hoped someone would overlook or forgive you for.

The difference is that Rose's offense was against the game, whereas Vick's offense was "outside the lines".

Hmmm... Six years (as an adult too) for torturing and killing dogs just for kicks. Many people might find that hard to overlook.
Obviously, this is not a simple one-off mistake.

Sure. But none of them involved actual crimes or killing anything.

I didn't say it was. He paid his legal debt to society (whether one wants to argue that he paid enough of a debt is another debate; I happen to think he didn't), and If someone wants to take a chance and employ him that is their right.

I've got tickets already to see the Raiders vs. Eagles in Oakland. I can't wait to see response Vick gets from the black hole!
Best sign so far: "Hide your Beagle! Vick's an eagle!"

Yeah, Oakland fans could really use a break from wallowing in anguish and embarrassment to make fun of a dog-killer for a game or so.
Also...the beagle/Eagle sign is fantastic.

If you don't allow the opportunity for former criminals to reintegrate into society without wearing a scarlet letter, then you're dooming them to a life of crime and you're dooming the rest of us to an ever growing prison and criminal population. If you're going to refuse to interact with, buy from, sell to, etc a former criminal, then they'll have no economic viability and they will engage in crime again. It's really pretty simple.

Indeed. I sure as hell wouldn't hire him for my pro football team or whatever though. Too much of a PR risk.
