Getting a bit ahead even though 10.6 Snow Leopard has not been released yet, but today was wondering what other wild cats could be contenders for the next OS X system.

Came up with these:

Bobcat
Cougar
Lion
Lynx
Ocelot

Added Ocelot to the list because though it's small and cute looking, it would rip your head off in a second.

"Panther", "Tiger" and "Leopard" are registered as trademarks of Apple, but "Cheetah", "Puma" and "Jaguar" have never been registered. Apple has also registered "Lynx" and "Cougar" as trademarks, though these were allowed to lapse.

That's interesting.

Wonder if they will skip to another animal to go with new names.

As for "Cheetah", "Puma" and "Jaguar" they were just code names for the OS's until the name leaked out for Jaguar and was known as Jaguar with everyone so they decide to go with the code name and stuck after that. So that's why they probably registered it after that.

I've always wondered what they were going to do after 10.9. 10.10? Mac OS XI/11? Mac OS X 11.0?

I don't think they will call Bobcat due to trademark issue (Bobcat is a trademark for a company making small compact excavator Bobcat Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I don't think Apple wants to run into situation they had back in Mac OS X 10.2 days, where they cannot market it as Jaguar
because of Jaguar cars.

That would be stupid. Trademark isn't supposed to cover every possible use of a term in commerce, especially if it's an existing word. It's supposed to be use of that term within a specific domain. Because nobody in their right mind would think Apple is producing an OS version in a joint effort with Bobcat excavators, the latter company would have no legal standing in a trademark suit against Apple.

Note that I'm not saying you're stupid for bringing this up. It's entirely possible that such a lawsuit would happen, and Apple would have to waste stupid amounts of money getting the thing dropped.

Well, if you were in US during the Jaguar days of course you won't have a clue. In many parts of the world when Mac OS X 10.2 was released, Apple made no reference with the word 'Jaguar' anywhere. I even got an official Apple Mac OS X 10.2 T-shirt in Australia, and it was stated "Introducing Mac OS X 10.2" with the Jaguar logo, but no 'Jaguar' word referred anywhere. I went to an Apple Mac OS X 10.2 seminar, and they didn't mentioned the word either!

So I would imagine Apple would rather prefer avoid Bobcat if Bobcat company actively defend their trademark...

I'll go out on a limb and claim that Apple not marketing 10.2 had *nothing* to do with Jaguar, the motor company, as the danger of brand confusion was pretty much non-existent unless you were repeatedly dropped on your head when you were very very small.

Brands are protected in the markets they're relevant to. Jaguar doesn't make computers or operating systems.

Apple didn't start marketing OS X by the internal development codenames until 10.3 Panther.

And why would they? They weren't actively promoting OS X as a brand before 10.2, and thus, there was no need to use cat names to distinguish between various incarnations.

I was off by a version.

That was the keynote where everything was "oat-o-matic" in "Jag-wire".

I'm not inclined to believe it. Especially given that Jaguar is owned by Ford.
