This is funny in a weird way. So below is a picture of a 3D representation of a pentacene molecule. I'm sure everyone remembers drawing these in chemistry, biology, etc., lettering each atom and showing how they're bonded.

OK. Now, ever wonder what a pentacene molecule really looks like? You're never gonna guess it. It's totally amazing.

It looks like Turtle's Dad to me.

Edit: Turtle beat me to it.

I have to agree, the old wordmark has been around since the 20's. The new one is incredibly bland.

What's changed with Audi ? (or did I just ignore a joke?)

also, there is a huge difference between "life imitates art" and "new technology verifies complete accuracy of theory-predicted model with sensational imagery", but that's a point probably not worth making here.

The new rings got the Nissan treatment while the wordmark is, like Brien says, bland and that's even a compliment… it just feels unresolved. I didn't like the previous one but the new is just meh.

I would have completely drop it and cling to the rings… which I would expect happening sooner than later, may this be the first step towards it. Not that I like the Audi logo but that's another matter.

This is the official logo image from audi.com and audi.de:

What am I missing?

Edit:

Oh.

Wikipedia explains that they're changing the logo this year.

From Wikipedia
Audi Sans (based on Univers Extended) was originally created in 1997 by Ole Schäfer for MetaDesign.
MetaDesign was later commissioned for a new corporate typeface called Audi Type, designed by Paul van der Laan of Type Invaders and Pieter van Rosmalen of Caketype. The font began to appear in Audi's 2009 products and marketing materials.[26]

Thanks for sharing that. Those IBM researchers are something else.
The general public (and a lot of people on these fora) have no idea of the contributions IBM has made to science.
