"You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction
with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the
moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the
neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, 'Look at that, you son of a bitch.'"

We think that's a dinky ship... but the typical vessel has no defense against it...

The pirates opened fire (in the dark, of course) with AKs, but in their flight from the French, they dumped EVERYTHING (including food and water) overboard so all that's left is a dinky knock-off Boston Waler with an outboard and five very frightened men.
A regular freighter has NO defense against someone with a revolver, let alone automatic weapons, so the attack was not so foolhardy as it seems. There's no way for an unarmed, unfortified ship to repel boarders, and often ships at sea leave ladders and boarding platforms deployed so all they need to do is lower their boats for whatever they're going to use them for-leading to guys with AKs being able to take over huge ships with dinky boats and unmitigated gall...

Maybe next time the navy should just shoot some 120 mm shells at them.

Throw some chum over the side and tip their boat over.
