First, is Focus Fusion. From planning, to development, to construction, then to operation, this group created a focused, fusion capable laser in just 7 years (10 months of that was the actual building, testing, and firing.) Absolutely astonishing.

Second, is an article on BBC about an exciting discovery and announcement. Apparently 40% of solar-type stars have planets! You can practically pick any star out of the night sky, and there's a good chance there're planets orbiting that sucker.

The next step is, of course, finding earth-mass terrestrial planets orbiting in their respectable habitable zones around other stars.

Unfortunately, that short schedule didn't allow for removing Excel's stupid default legend.

I never doubted that there were more planets out there. To think somehow that there are no other planets was a little arrogant of humans.

The saddest thing is that even if there is life out there, like us or not, they are probably too far away that even light-speed travel will never make it possible to travel to or from them.

As for fusion, bring it on!

If there are planets out there they must surely pose a threat. We must build lasers and destroy them.

I would love a giant laser. But rather than keeping it in a musty old building, I'd build an orbiting space station the size of the moon. I'd call this space station a "Death Star".
Though on second thought it should be called a "Death Moon", or at least a "Death Station". That's where the "Death Panels" decide the fate of dying stars. They'd have cool hats and cloaks and little robots that bump into each other...

But heh, planets orbiting 40% of the stars out there? That's pretty amazing. I'd thought maybe 10%. I suppose the next thing to invent would be some sort of worm hole time warper thingy to avoid actually having to travel these vast distances.

Thank you, and goodnight!

I have the Blu-ray disk of Event Horizon. I haven't watched it yet. I'm waiting for the perfect time. I'm thinking late at night when I've imbibed in some happy smoke. I didn't say that.

Is it going to scare the crap out of me?

I'm a little confused. I thought this particular experiment didn't use lasers? Just coils and electrodes?

Not too long ago there was a focus fusion laser experiment that achieved great success.

Yes, you're correct. I got the two confused. This is a different (and much cheaper) way of hypothetically causing fusion.

Just make sure you frame step during the video log scene. There's some wonderful scenery hidden in those 2 seconds.

A pretty cool feature of the device is that it works at arbitrary scales (under the positive characteristics section) due to energy density. Fusion powered cars/homes? (we can dream!)

I really hope they break even.

Btw, here is the presentation Eric Lerner gave to Google. Too bad he's been called a crackpot by some. At least he's thinking outside of the box.

Clearly you haven't seen Ultra Violet.
