A friend of mine who's Jewish and I were talking about this recently as her family who's very Kosher has said type of Ketchup on hand for (C)Hanukkah and such.

What was funny was when her non Jewish boyfriend was visiting and asked "...and what's this special ketchup for?" (I being a goy had to have the joke explained to me, but I lol'd when I got it).
What, me worry?

I always thought that Ketchup is to Catsup as what Kleenex is to Facial Tissues. i.e. Ketchup is a brand that was co-opted into everyday use.

ORIGIN late 17th cent.: perhaps from Chinese ( Cantonese dialect) k'ē chap ‘tomato juice.’

"Catsup" is a purely colonial bastardisation.
