The greatest minds in IT knew it all along:
The great iPhone death watch - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Brainstorm Tech

Let's just hope they can fail as spectacularly with a tablet!

My god, it could have been worse by Apple choosing Verizon over ATT's superior 3G network coverage.

Although *all* cell carriers have huge "sux" component, one could argue that the iPhone success has been all the more awesome in light of relying on neutered AT&T.

My favorite:
“God himself could not design a device that could live up to all the hype that the iPhone has gotten.” —Harvard computer science professor David Platt, 25 June 2007

Perhaps Dr. Platt has now made Apple his god? :/

I suspect that in an alternative universe the iPhone failed miserably.

I don't think technology people make good prophets.

That quote from Ed Colligan of Palm is one of my favorite things ever. Daring Fireball quotes it every time the iPhone passes another competitor.

It seems that they all STFUed after June 25, 2007.

Edit: Whoops! I didn't click the link at the bottom! I guess they haven't STFUed.

The backlash against the first iPod was 100 times worse. Everyone thought that thing was a dud.

I (and most everyone else) thought it was ridiculous that Apple was charging $400 for a walkman. I just didn't get it. Then again, the iPod got a lot better and cheaper rather quickly and didn't really catch on for a few years.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

The quotes on AAPLinvestors' death watch list by the RIM CEO are actually pretty interesting (though he's not actually knocking the iPhone so much as defending his company, so that may be why).

Or how about the former Apple VP - who apparently began drinking the WRONG koolaid:

“Is there a toaster that also knows how to brew coffee? There is no such combined device, because it would not make anything better than an individual toaster or coffee machine. It works the same way with the iPod, the digital camera or mobile phone: it is important to have specialized devices,”
Former Apple Vice President, iPod Division, now with Palm, Jon Rubenstein, September 27, 2005

My favorite one is
The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant… Apple is unlikely to make much of an impact on this market… Apple will sell a few to its fans, but the iPhone won’t make a long-term mark on the industry.

The cnn.com article links to aaplinvestors.net which has a lot more and even more recent quotes.
