Sony's Daily Edition eReader is coming out. Allows 3G connectivity. Any thoughts on it? Will it compete with the Kindle?

I found this review:

I love my Kindle DX, but I do wish that it had a SD slot. Other than that, I couldn't be happier.

Like every device in that market, it seems rather useless and vulgar.

Except that I can carry every book I'll need in a slim messenger bag. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who loves books more than me, but I just love reading on my Kindle. I just wish people would leave me alone when I'm reading at the coffee shop, everyone wants to stop by and fiddle with it.

I'm waiting for a color e-Ink device, then I might buy one.

I've got the basic Sony Reader and I love it. It'll be ok until the next jump in functionality, hopefully colour e-ink. That's the minute I'll upgrade.

Just like I've got music on vinyl and on disk - I can't stand CDs - I will have books on paper and in electronic format. Different formats for different needs.

Pixel Qi... I think that is what the world wants and is waiting for. It's shipping, apparently, now, in the first set of notebooks.

It's an eInk display mixed with an LCD display. It has a backlight, does color and black and white, and has both backlight and reflective modes. One for dark environments, and the other for well lit environments.

Here's a demo:

for me, the major appeal of Kindle is the built-in dictionary.

but i am not buying yet.

The Sony has a built-in dictionary too. You touch a word twice with your finger (double touch) and the definition pops up in a small, overlayed window. It's slick. It also allows stylus input to scribble notes right on the page.

That's amazing. If the upcoming Apple tablet has anything like this I'll be buying.

If (when) the Kindle app comes out for Mac like the pc version, that coupled with the Apple tablet could be quite the combo! The downside would be battery life, but if the Apple tables can last longer than a MacBook on a charge it might be the way to go.

Update. I bought a Nook and I'm really impressed with it, snagged one for only $199 the day the price dropped (they even have one that's Wifi only for $150). I wanted something smaller to tote around in my pocket, and I can't get over the construction and feel of it. Strangely, it feels like an Apple product, very solid and sleek.

If you're still on the fence for a reader, this is the time to jump off.

What's the 3G fee situation like on it?

It's not bad, works as well as my Kindle. Despite it being on AT&T's network, which can be dog-assed slow, it navigates the store without issues and it takes 20-30 sec to DL a book.

Oh, okay, good to know. But I was wondering about 3G monthly fees and whether or not it requires a contract.

Sorry, missed this earlier.

No contract, no fees. Also, WiFi transfers are almost instantaneous. I bought a book and it showed up on my nook before I could navigate back to my library.
