Calling all video enthusiasts. In 2010 I will finally have the budget to replace my 1024x768 projector with a 720p (1080p doesn't impress me that much) 3D DLP system.
What do you think of this combination?
1. Optoma Announces the 3D Ready HD66 Projector�-�AVRev.com
2. CyberLink’s 3D Blu-ray PowerDVD CES 2010 - Geek News Central
3. 2.6GHz Dual Core AMD, 4GB RAM, 780G. Plays current Bluray titles just fine.
4. Windows 7, or Ubuntu 10.04 with makemkv and mplayer
5. No idea on what shutter glasses to obtain

I am kinda deaf, so let's not talk about audio.

Personally, I don't think 3D technology is ready for home use. Active shutter glasses? Please.

You can't watch TV without the glasses. Think of all the casual things you do with the TV on, and now think about how you can't properly watch it without the stupid glasses.

When people are talking about 3D TV, are they talking about normal theater type 3D that requires polarized glasses? I thought the chatter was about holographic TV, which sounds a lot cooler. Nonetheless, where's the content coming from?

If the sets could be switched between 3D and standard then at least you could have the set on while doing other things around the home. I wonder how much the glasses will be? You would need a pair for everyone in the house, and guests too sometimes. I can't find the remote half the time, let alone trying to keep track of multiple pairs of glasses.

Sadly it's not eve as cool as the normal theater type 3D. The glasses you wear aren't just the polarized ones, they're 'active lens' glasses. They require a connection to the television (either wired or wireless) and use lenses that can be cycled between opaque and transparent electronically to rapidly switch back and forth from side to side in sync with the refresh rate on your tv. So one frame you view through your left eye, the next you view through your right eye. This, of course, means that the glasses need a power source of some sort as well.

Yeah, this is the real deal-breaker for me. I don't foresee them being able to do much with regular "flat" videos, and I can't imagine they'll be shooting much content for such a niche consumer.

Discovery is launching a 3D network in partnership with SONY and IMAX. DirectTV has also announced 3D networks upcoming.

Don't buy into this version of 3D. The tech isn't ready yet.

It seems a little misguided to try and release this new tech when HDTV hasn't been adopted by most people yet.

True 3D TV does not require glasses. However, this type of 3D TV is just in the prototype stage.

Personally I think glasses-requiring 3D as proposed for the near term is kind of a joke. A big kludge, and I'm not interested in it at all. Maybe it will be OK in 5-10 years, when the tech is better and the content is actually worth looking at, but that's a big maybe.

Someone I know in the ad business has seen a few prototype holographic (or as he calls it, "true 3D") TVs.

He says they're great, but the key point there is that the content is created specifically for the demos he saw. If some ad person wants to use this as an expensive public ad he can do that, because the ad will be created specifically for this purpose.

TV isn't the same. To actually make holographic TV palatable, all the production for TV shows has to change dramatically to support it.
