Macworld 2010: Controlling a telescope via iPhone | Between the Lines | ZDNet.com

Check out this iPhone app. Not only is it a star gazer and atlas, but it also works with your GoTo system. It uses the digital compass, accelerometers, and GPS to give you a realtime atlas as you move the iPhone around. Freakin' cool.

Yeah, I have to get a new telescope for that, and it's not in the budget. I soooo want one. Of course, finding things yourself is half the fun, learning about RA/DEC, etc. However, the Big Guys don't move their telescopes by hand on the mountains, do they?

I don't have a telescope at the moment. Fortunately I'm only 45 minutes from Lick Observatory where ever summer the public gets to use their monster 36" and 40" refractors.

I trust you've both already got the "Distant Suns" app? With GPS and compass, it's totally kick-ass.

I have a 10" Orion with the GoTo system, I'll have to give that a try.

It's Friday afternoon and no one has made a Uranus joke yet? What is this forum coming to?

I think the non-telescope applications for this product (and the remote controller, of course) are fascinating. Run robots from your iPhone! What about "real" home automation? What about just being able to use the remote controller as a battery powered wireless access point? Wow. This is truly cool.
