As some of you might know, i recently purchased a PS3 (yay!).... But soon after began the laborious task of converting my media drive from HFS+ to FAT32.

So i got a swap drive(smaller) and formatted it as HFS+, and transferred everything from one(HFS+) to the swap(HFS+) and then back to the reformatted original drive(FAT32). It all worked fine, and i havent deleted the copy of my stuff from the swap drive yet.

Then today, i tried moving a folder over from the swap drive(HFS+) to the FAT32 drive the second time... and i get an "cannot copy because data cannot be read or written error -36" or something. Whats the deal ?

Initially when i moved everything back onto the reformatted FAT32 drive i didnt get this error, and now i am. Any clues ?

Cheers

No, that Knowledgebase article refers to SMB/CIFS network servers running unencrypted passwords.

That is not even nearly the "exact problem" he's having when connecting an external hard drive.

Have Disk Utility verify both drives. That error sounds like filesystem damage.

10.6.3 resolved some -36 Finder copy errors. Make sure you're updated if you're on SL.

I should have said "that same error message." Since the disk he's using is formatted in FAT32, and he didn't say precisely how he connected it, I made a guess about how applicable the article would be. And I hoped my post would spur him either to some more searching himself or clue us in on what he HAD found in his searching...

I am connecting these drives over USB, and the disks have been formatted correctly using Disk utility. Art Vandelay, Cheers for the heads up, im on 10.6.2, and will upgrade to .3 soon.

I found a solution soon after i posted here, and it's got to do with the 'dot folders' mac OSX creates... a quick fix and explanation can be found here:
Solution to Finder “Error code -36″ in 10.6 when copying folders | MacYourself

Glad you found it. That's a royal pain of a bug!
