Eagles Trade 6-Time Pro Bowl QB McNabb to Redskins

Eagles trade 6-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb to Redskins for pair of draft picks

The Philadelphia Eagles couldn't possibly trade McNabb to a division rival, right? Wrong.

No. 5 will wear burgundy and gold next season.

In a surprise move Sunday night, the Eagles sent McNabb to the Redskins for a second-round pick (37th overall) in this month's NFL draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year.

"You can't say that we didn't think about that," Eagles coach Andy Reid said of having to face McNabb twice a year. "We did, but this was a decision that we thought was best for Donovan and, at the same time, the compensation was right for us. We certainly took into consideration Donovan's feelings here, too."

McNabb is the next Bret Favre - a hand-me-down, passed from franchise to franchise.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Suggestions the Philadelphia Eagles were considering trading quarterback Donovan McNabb was "shocking", New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has said.

"It's shocking that a guy who's been such an important part of their organization, that they'd want to get rid of him," Manning told Reuters after an appearance in New York. "He's had great seasons these last couple of years."

Manning is coming off an 8-8 season that left the Giants out of the post-season for the first time in five years, while McNabb drove the Eagles into the playoffs with an 11-5 record. Both teams play in the NFC East.

According to local media reports the Eagles have been testing the market interest in McNabb and are prepared to play the next season with Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick as their quarterbacks.

"You kind of heard rumors the last couple of years," said Manning. "I'm kind of waiting to see if something truly happens.

"Donovan has been a tremendous player for the Eagles, a staple of their organization. He's a tremendous competitor and a tremendous person."

McNabb took Philadelphia to the 2005 Super Bowl and to the NFC conference championship game for three successive years prior to that, but has not been able to lift the title, causing intense media scrutiny and feelings of underachievement.

IIRC, Jason Campbell actually had pretty similar numbers to McNabb last season. At the very least, this simplifies the Redskins' draft needs (get an offensive line).

"One ticket to Washington, please. I have a date with destiny."
