You seem pretty obsessed with celebrities. Your pony sir, does only one trick.

No, his pony is very versatile. Have you seen what it can do if you give it a mango that looks like George Takei's head?

Apparently the Spanish Prime Minister's resemblance to Mr. Bean is a running joke in Europe.

He's a nice, quiet guy in real life. A friend of mine owned an apartment in the same building he lived in, close to Paddington station in London.

I remember seeing him in a short where he played Steven Wright's psychiatrist. The first shot is of Wright, in is inimitable low energy style, chasing him down in a rock quarry with a hunting rifle.
IOW, it was awesome.

Yeah, I thought the same. It just looked cheap. I've got the first two series and am kind of meh about them now.
Oh, and I saw him once, on the subway in London, trying out a new routine. He was sitting down, trying to open a briefcase and just not managing. It was hilarious, but of course nobody knew whether this was a hidden camera sketch or not. In the end Londoners did what Londoners do best, hide behind the newspaper and pretended it just wasn't happening.

Rowan Atkinson is a brilliant actor, but his roles tend to be rather stupid. Mr. Bean particularly so, but Blackadder as well. When he plays non-stupid roles, though, he’s very good. I loved him in The Thin Blue Line, though, and he was great in Love, Actually, too.

I didn't like the movie very much, but I love the TV show. Also love Black Adder.

Different types of comedy. Mr. Bean is physical comedy, which he did very well. Blackadder is mental or intellectual comedy, which he also does very well. I enjoy both for different reasons. The Mr. Bean Christmas special cracks me up every year, as does the Blackadder Christmas special.
I think Blackadder holds up quite well - well maybe not production quality, but the script is as funny as ever.

Blackadder was always more hip than Mr. Bean. While Blackadder was never particularly "good" as a person, he was witty, sarcastic and droll. Mr. Bean is a twit, which is the whole point of the character.
Rowan was wonderful in Love, Actually. The character was classy, a bit fastidious, and wonderfully odd, all at the same time.

Nope. I'm more like a cross between Clarkson and May, with added Jack Dee... ...trapped in the body of Dave Mustaine.

I think the whole reason why Blackadder hasn't aged very well it that it was so popular that most of the phrasing, mannerisms and jokes have become commonplace in British society. Thus, when watching it these days you're not being exposed to anything which you haven't already heard a zillion times already.
So humour is becoming more absurdist...

Just remember if you try Blackadder... season one is pretty dreadful; I don't like it at all. Season 2 and on are far better. Season 4 even has Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (who now plays House).

I'm sure you are saying something amusing as all but I've never heard of any of those people so I don't get it.

I've seen the Bean TV show too many times.
I always hated the movie. The character and the show's sketch structure just don't translate well to feature-length film.
Haven't got around to re-watching Blackadder.
I still love "Johnny English". Seen it a dozen time. Still love it.

They have this technology thingy these days which is very useful for researching stuff. It's called "the Internet". Ask yer local citizen's advice office about it.

Well, yes—but the question whether we’d ever heard of them. Which we hadn’t.

I find it hard to believe that neither of you have heard of Clarkson or May. You've never seen Top Gear, nor seen any talk about it here on the 'NN?
Next you're going to tell me you've never heard of Bono. Or Barrack Obama. Or The Queen.

All right—I guess I have heard of them, indirectly (and even seen them, briefly, though as it happens, I never have seen Top Gear). But I don’t think I’ve ever heard or seen their names—so just seeing the names (or even just seeing the faces alone, since I probably wouldn’t recognise them) would mean nothing to me. Had you said “the host of Top Gear”, I would have had at least some idea of who it was.
Next you're going to tell me you've never heard of Bono. Or Barrack Obama. Or The Queen.

You can add me to the list of people that haven't heard of Clarkson or May. And nope, haven't ever seen Top Gear.
And no one has mentioned Mr. Bean in Rat Race? It was a pretty dumb/funny movie that Mr. Bean had a talking role in.

Top Gear is half "this is exceptionally cool auto stuff" and half "how did these loons escape-and who gives them money and cars to play with?" Jeremy is amusingly pompous and boorish-but knows his cars. May is...well, May. And then there's Hammond, who is rather "odd" himself. And Jeremy would add that Hammond is short as well. Quite amusing with almost no seriousness at all. Except the cars.

May the only one of the trio who is genuinely cool. The Capt'n Slow persona hides a really interesting guy.
He's a multi-award winning journalist and writer and geeky in just the right way. I loved James May toy stories, where he explores the history of classic toys, then does something insane with them like build a life size bridge across a canal out of Meccano - then walks across it.

The only one I've seen is the life-size Airfix model kit of a Spitfire.
The way he did it involved just enough of his own ego/fantasy to make it happen, turning a couple of kids onto the sadly dying art of model building, giving them a sense of accomplishment, and deference to the people involved with the original planes (veteranengineers and pilots were invited to the roll-out).
Just cool in every way.

Watch the episode where he builds himself a house out of Lego. He actually spends a, very uncomfortable, night sleeping in his lego bed.

I took my kids to go help build it- even got interviewed on camera. Didn't make the cut and we don't appear in the show or the book. This made us slightly sad.
