Herbie Hancock is now 70 years old!

Any fans of his in here? He's definitely one of the great musical talents living today, in my opinion... He's done such an incredible variety of different projects too ranging from his funk with the Headhunters, Rockit/Future Shock (which may have been on of the first albums to feature scratching), his Joni Mitchell album which won the album of the year award, work with jazz greats such as Miles, Freddie Hubbard, etc., his Fat Albert stuff, his work with electronic music and video, his movie score work, vocorder stuff, his collaborations with other artists including Stevie Wonder, Santana, John Mayer, Sting, Christina Aguilera, Paul Simon, etc., his help producing albums including one by Kanye West, his Classical music stuff...

Talk about a career!

His stint as an anthropomorphic VW Bug also merits mention.

Wasn't he promoting Apple gear at some point too? I seem to recall him being a Logic shill or something like that, or perhaps just advocating Macs in general. Crazy that a man his age can be so technologically hip!

Jarre was doing what Hancock did, but 10 years earlier.

Can you be more specific?

That pretty much sums it up.

Maybe you should make these corrections to his Wikipedia page where I lifted most of this stuff from, see if your changes stick...

Why do people insist on trying to assign titles to artists? Whether Hancock was literally the first person to get into x or y is an interesting academic point, but at the end of the day Hancock is Hancock and Jarre is Jarre. Trying to undermine other artists this way (as some people do, such as many of the clowns that comment to YouTube videos) is just dumb, especially since if you take several things out of Hancock's list of accomplishments he is still worthy of respect. The dude has had a long and distinguished career, you can't deny that.

Jarre has never done anything like Hancock, and vice versa. I completely fail to see any connection beyond "they used a Fairlight and Arp synthesizers" and the fact that they both operate keyboards. And that much applies to quite a bit of 80s pop.

Met this guy at Berklee. Very down to earth person. It was a great 25 minutes.

I'm just saying that as great as Hancock was, because Jarre isn't from the U.S., people here tend to not know their musical history.

A lot of people don't know who Schoenberg was, but that doesn't have the slightest thing to do with Hancock.

Herbie Hancock is a musical genius. Maiden Voyage is one of the all-time greatest jazz albums IMO.

Agreed.

I really dig Fat Albert Rotunda and the Headhunter stuff even more, though.

I love the funky.

Agreed, and Dolphin Dance is one of my favorite jazz standards from that album. The Head Hunters album "Head Hunters" is also one of the best selling jazz albums of all time.
