It was not a hard decision to make, but I decided to sell my 2 GHz CD MB, add $30, and go pure with an iPad 3G. If any work (Linux) needs to be done, and there's no app for that, I'll X11 my way through.
It really was an easy decision, as I see more and more clearly that OSX is taking a backseat to Apple's mobile OS. I can always go back if 10.7 can rally developer attention.
I'm also considering kicking my cellphone out, as VoIP will be allowed soon with ipos4.

As in that's all you'll use for computing? That'll be a pain, especially before OS 4.0.

Hmm... It almost seems like you're going out of your way to make your life difficult. Getting rid of your laptop and cellphone for an iPad, something which isn't intended to replace either? Why? Just because Apple's been pushing iPhone OS lately?
I guess cost might be a good reason, but if it were just cost, you'd be better off just sticking with the MacBook.

Seriously, if you ever have the need to open a PowerPoint or even Keynote or Pages file from an email, you've already shot yourself in the foot. Boom.

Kind of extreme, but I love the concept of using the iPad as an iPhone.

Hmm, interesting.
If more people start thinking like this Apple has a problem on its hands. Steve claims he has it covered, but maybe it's time for a reality check.

I think Don knows that the iPad is a limited computing device, but having it as his computer makes sense to him.

Because until 4.0, you just view it, it won't open in its own respective app, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Is that a joke?
At any rate I agree that 10.7 is gonna take a back seat and I understand why as I think they are figuring out where to take the UI next as touch seems to be future. I hope they kill the finder among other things as well.
I wouldn't use the iPad as a full time phone replacement though.

No, that apparently didn't work very well. I'll have to try something else...

Should have said PowerPoint or Word... obviously Keynote and Pages work if you have the apps installed...

Actually, unless Apple is really stupid, Powerpoint and Word documents should still open in Keynote and Pages. Has anyone tried that?
That said, for Powerpoint and Word on the Mac, I use Powerpoint and Word. Too many formatting issues, etc., esp. if you want to save back into Powerpoint or Word. Can you even do that for Keynote and Pages on the iPad?

Pages can export to Word and PDF (and maybe RTF, but I don't think so).
Keynote can export to PDF.

From what I saw at the Apple Store, you can't open PowerPoint and Word files from emails on the iPad. You can only export files that you create or edit to different formats.
EDIT: I think it's kind of dumb that this device that got caught up in a crapload of hype still makes people ask essentially simple questions like the one being debated here and nobody knows the hard answer. It's a sign that the device may not live up to the hype...

Hmm... That's really stupid then. However, that could change with iPhone 4.0.

We'll see. Apple's changed a lot of frameworks and APIs around, so it's certainly possible.

That is absolutely stupid. A simple and straight-forward chance to get some kind of content creation on the iPad and it's not there. Let's hope Apple gets it together by OS 4. Heck, eventually we even got copy-paste in iPhone OS. After a lot of complaining and bad press, that is.

We already know that you can choose an application to open an attachment with in OS4.

I asked him about it at Starbucks the other day, and he shrugged it off then, too.

Oh you mean all that "Bad Press" that gave them killer sales from day one? Just like they have to fix that flash problem or the iPad won't sell 1 million in 30 days and better than the iPhone.
I think you guys give the general consumer too much, or too little credit.

There were still a lot of complaints about no copy and paste... and now that it's added, nobody uses it At least I don't very often.

And the non-removable battery was a HUGE issue apparently as well.

Yeah, I use copy and paste all the time, too.
Oh and I'm really, really, really, really looking forward to that iPhone OS 4.0 option for viewing orientation lock. The lack of that is the #1 complaint I have about the iPhone.

Same here. I use copy-paste all the time.
The orientation lock is nice. Unfortunately, right now it allows locking in portrait mode only.
What I really was glad to see though is that we're getting iPod controls in the multitasking dock. To me double-home to get to the multitasking interface meant losing quick access to iPod controls which I use all the time. Now it looks like that functionality will remain available.
