Silent electric cars to get 'Star Wars' sound effects to warn pedestrians they are coming | Mail Online

Their noiseless glide has seen them dubbed the silent killers of the road.
But electric cars could soon be given special 'signature tunes' so that pedestrians can hear them coming and avoid stepping out into their path.
The decision comes following concerns from road safety experts that the 'green' credentials of the zero-emission cars may be overshadowed by a rising accident and death toll caused by the fact that they are so eerily quiet.

Regulators in the European Union, Japan and the United States are considering allowing manufacturers an array of sounds - from the conventional brum brum car engines to sci-fi sounds from Star Wars.
That'll keep the birth rate down.

Perhaps they'll allow reverse psychology sound tracks.

"Please remain where you are. We'll be there soon. All your tax problems resolved immediately. We do inattentive pedestrians. It is time."

Perhaps not.

Chancellor Merkel does look quite a bit like the Emperor in that photo.

Only in Amer... What?

Stupid sounds aren't going to save anyone but the blind and only because they are smart enough to be careful.

That's kind of the premise behind the whole idea... for a couple of years now people have been trying to solve this problem with cars like the Prius which may run either very quietly or all electric within a city, which is a thread to the blind.

Actually, I know a stupid woman who doesn't bother looking when she crosses the road since she'll "hear cars coming". So this measure will save people like her. Whether that's good for the gene pool or not, I don't know.

This was the first thing I thought of when I read the title...

A long time ago, I read a science fiction short story about a weapon tester set down on a very wild (and dangerous) planet and tasked with testing a super-powerful handheld weapon. It mowed down the dangerous critters like nothing, but they kept coming. Why? It was silent... Lesson: something dangerous should sound dangerous... I truly agree with that. Of course I don't think an electric car should make any sound when it's not necessary, so I'd like to see this all set up based on speed and proximity-city/traffic speeds and anything within 10 meters or so would enable the sounds, while higher speeds and/or nothing around would leave them turned off.
