Lena Horne, R.I.P.

Feelings of “stormy weather” enveloped the nation today as news of Lena Horne’s death surfaced.

Horne led an inspirational life that was filled with great success and groundbreaking achievements. She was an avid civil rights activist with a career in show business that spanned over 60 years.

At the ripe age of 16, she started her monumental career that broke racial barriers and challenged pundits to change the way they thought about women of color in entertainment.

Horne showed insurmountable integrity throughout her life when she was denied supporting roles because of her race, and when she had lost her father, husband and son all within a year.

Her resume included all-black screen musicals like Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, and she even graced the silver screen in notable performances such as The Wiz.

Horne, 92, died Sunday at New York–Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
