NBC cancels original ‘Law & Order’
Show to end its run with upcoming 20th season finale
By Josh Dickey

updated 36 minutes ago

NBC will not renew the original "Law & Order" at the upcoming conclusion of its 20th season, leaving it tied with "Gunsmoke" as the longest-running scripted show in television history.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The cancellation was confirmed Thursday to TheWrap by a person close to the show's production.

Its final episode will air May 24.

It is still as good as ever. Why cancel it now???

NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I don't know that I really even enjoy it anymore. But it's a touchstone- a constant. This makes me sad.

It's a television show, folks. Not reality.

But the stories! They were ripped...RIPPED from the headlines!

That's too bad. It was my 'go to' when I wanted something on in the background while doing work.

If it didn't happen in America it's not fit to grace the pages of history!

No, it's not. I'd rather watch reruns of the old crews. The current crop doesn't do it for me. The two main cops just aren't the same caliber actors as the older ones. Not that they're bad, but they just don't sell the roll 100% like the previous guys. Linus Roach's character grates me a little too much also. Sam Waterson is a tough act to follow since he was perfect in that role.

I prefer SVU at this point.

Some people rebel at the inclusion of left wing sensibilities in the show.

The Dodgers. “The Tonight Show.” Now “Law & Order.”

NBC confirmed on Friday that another cherished New York brand was moving to Los Angeles.
The network canceled the original “Law & Order” series after keeping it on the air for 20 years. In its place, NBC is ordering a new drama, “Law & Order: Los Angeles,” moving the franchise to a place where there are presumably more murders to investigate.

At least one “Law & Order” spinoff will stay in New York: NBC said on Friday that it had renewed “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” for another season.

The USA cable channel, which shows another spinoff, “Criminal Intent,” has not yet decided to order more episodes.

It's not as good as it used to be, but I wish it would stay on. It's still waaaaaaay better than the first 2-3 seasons with Ben mumble-loser Stone and captain whiney-ass Cragen.

NBC’s Thursday night sitcoms will all be back for the 2010-11 television season that starts next fall. The network announced Friday evening that it had ordered new seasons of “The Office,” “30 Rock” and “Community.”

I like Law and Order. I prefer SVU (peanut) over regular (plain), and like Criminal Intent (crispy) the least (I named them after M&Ms).

However, I have noticed what I call the Matlock effect. Take just about any episode and watch the clock. At about 52-55 minutes, there will be a "Matlock moment". This is when the suspect, witness, etc. confesses or incriminates his or herself. It's pretty sad, really, that writers are no better now than they were in the 80s.

Thanks for the link, but what I meant is that they'll have to call it something else since NBC won't be at 30 Rockefeller Center

I still don't get it. Doesn't NBC still film a lot of stuff there?
