iPhone 3GS After Market (Unlcoked) Buying Advice

I'm a Verizon customer back in the US, but now that I'll be traveling internationally much more frequently I'd like to get a GSM phone instead of using lame-o loaner phones. I have my eyes on unlocked iPhone 3GS, and I'm eying some on eBay right now, so I'm wondering if anyone has buying advice for me about them. Obviously I want to buy one that's less than a year old so that I can get Apple Care, but other than that is there anything else notable I should be looking out for in preparing to buy?

Obviously, don't buy anything with 4.02 firmware.
Probably everyone here can confirm that JB iPhones are going for 50% more than their unJB-able counterparts. It is normal in Craigslist offerings.
On the other hand, JB phones don't qualify for Apple Care.
