Google TV will fail. The reason is simple: adding TV to a computer is easy, but adding internet to a TV is hard.

Right now, you can buy a cheap computer, add TV hardware and software, and connect it up to a television. And it will be dirt obvious how to use it, because you already know how to use a computer.

Google TV is both a new way to control your TV, and a new way to control the web. Trying to replace keyboard/mouse with a single controller with a zillion buttons is not gonna fly. And it provides no advantages over the PC+TV option above.

Some form of TV over the internets will succeed and succeed big in the near future, but it won't be GoogleTv... at least, it won't be this version of GoogleTV.

It needs to be something that's really easy to use and has all of the content people want.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

It will be no different than the tv; modestly successful but won't go beyond a niche. It's way to complicated for the average user.

However it's no fun to use.

But I'm glad they're trying.

I haven't seen a single one of these set top boxes that exceeds or even meets the potential that a digital media playback device could have. Play all my formats, be a second DVR, connect to my computers, stream/download/store content from all the various online sources, and be reasonably priced.

They are all niche devices with mediocre success.

NetFlix over PS3 is a good product. I'd say about 80% of all TV usage by me and my roommates is over NetFlix. The other 20% being live sporting events on cable.

We didn't buy the PS3 with this in mind, but after realizing how convenient it is, it became the dominant way to watch TV shows in our apartment.
