My PVR's hard drive died, and it didn't really bother me that much. The recent main TV shows are out there in internet-land available for download. I will replace the hard drive, but it got me thinking about this again...
My local provider has some video on demand, and a fair amount of time-shifting, but I think they're gonna need to expand the selection and improve the ease-of-access or else risk losing more customers. People are starting to drop their cable or satellite TV subscriptions completely. Not in huge droves, but it's happening.
I guess the biggest advantage to my cable subscription is the HD quality and the convenience. The downloaded HD out there is pretty mediocre and it takes a little bit of effort sometimes to get it, both for paid downloads and otherwise. Remove these two limitations, and cable/satellite has a problem.
So, how many of you that watch TV have no cable or satellite service? AppleTV is a step in the right direction, but it's still limited by selection and quality.

I cancelled my cable a few months back.
I do Netflix via ATV exclusively.

My good friends only use Netflix for their TV service at this point, and I imagine I'd do the same.
Fast internet is far more important to me than paying 60 dollars a month to watch a handful of channels.

I haven't had cable since I lived in the dorms. Actually, it's turned on at the place I'm renting now, but I don't pay for it. Or watch it, for that matter. Though I do plan on catching Top Gear tonight.
Everything else is DVDs or Hulu through my Mini.

Actually, for a few years when HD TVs were less common, I actually had an HDTV for DVD and no cable service. $3000 TV and rabbit ears. But that's because I was within line-of-sight of the main transmission tower (CN Tower) and I could get all the main channels OTA. I also had a DVD-RAM recorder for time-shifting. OTA doesn't work so well now in my new house, and I'm not keen on erecting a giant antenna to remedy the situation, although I've often thought it'd be nice to OTA and just use basic analogue cable for channels like Space, which isn't HD in Canada anyway. But then again, most of the shows on Space are on SyFy and air a few days earlier, so they're already available out there, or on iTunes so I wouldn't really need the analogue cable either. $2.99 per show is rather steep though.
