Am I the only one absolutely delighted that Spaulding beat Beiber for the Best New Artist category?

Spaulding >>>>>> Beiber, although Beiber was definitely the favorite to win because he was every 14 year old girl's favorite pick. I like this quote from this article:

Who Is Esperanza Spalding, The Grammys' Best New Artist? : A Blog Supreme : NPR

Much of the mainstream pop audience, which may well have heard her name for the first time Sunday night, surely thought: Esperanza who? (One presumably angry Justin Bieber fan vandalized Spalding's Wikipedia entry by writing, among other things, "WHO THE HECK ARE YOU ANYWAY?")
Maybe some of these 14 year old girls might take an interest in the upright bass now? Nahhhh...

Well, it's for best new artist, not artist with the most 12 y/o Facebook friends.

I went to Berklee with her. I saw her go from pretty much the ground to where she is now. She's an awesome person to practice and perform with. Always wants the best out of me, and the others she performs with.

Yeah, but let's face it, popularity is a huge component of the Grammy's.

I'm definitely an Esperanza Spalding fan. Just happened to be listening to a segment about her on NPR a few years back and I decided to get a copy of her album that was out at the time. Having said that, I find it a bit "odd" that she was able to win Best New Artist when she is on her third studio album. Just how does the Grammy nomination committee define "new artist"?

I suppose they classify a "new" artist as one who is suddenly being noticed on a much larger scale. I still hadn't heard of her until she won the Grammy, but I'm glad I did. I bought two songs out of curiosity, and she's incredible.

It looks like I misspelled her name... It's "Esperanza Spalding".

BPR: I bet Berklee is licking their chops over the PR opportunities this award will bring the school since ES went there The music school I went to was the home of Joshua Bell and Chris Botti, this is definitely used to promote the school.

I find it amazing how good songs can be updated to sound like they belong in the era we live in. For instance, one of the jazz standards that ES performs is Body and Soul, that song is very old school - we're talking Coleman Hawkins/Duke Ellington/big band era old, yet her rendition sounds so urban, modern, and cool!
