Prediction: AAPL buys 51% of ATT, makes iPhone 5 iNet exclusive.

Name change from AT&T to iNet and operates it with low margins, like what it does with iTunes, in 2011 (same price rates, more reinvestment).
Offers developers another revolutionary dimension with iNet, to make iThings and Macs absolute must-haves, in 2012.

Interesting thought, but I don't think Apple wants to associate itself with the reputed poor network quality of AT&T. With the Verizion move Apple is finally putting some distance between itself and AT&T. It would make some sense if AT&T were really undervalued, but it doesn't seem to be based on a $168 billion market cap. A 50% stake in that would be rather expensive, even with Apple's mammoth wallet. And I doubt it would seem very sensible from Wall Street's vantage point.
More carrier independence is clearly Apple's goal, but I don't think the company has any intention of becoming a wireless carrier just to change the wireless carrier market paradigm.

I doubt it, and I can't see Apple getting involved at that level.

I forgot to add that ATT market capitalisation drops to $50B and 51% of that is a palatable $25.5B.

If Apple wanted to own a wireless network, they'd start their own.

Why should Apple bother? Let the big telecoms duke it out over the networks and Apple can focus on what they do best.

Sure, but Apple doesn't want/need the image of AT&T, not to mention the magnificent legal battle that would ensue.

Actually, AT&T is the biggest and best GSM network of the nation.
Comcast can, and Apple's ulterior motive is in agreeance with Apple fans.

Biggest yes, but "best" depends upon your definition of "best."

I don't see the point: Steve Jobs has always maintained, they'll do what Apple knows how to do and leaves other things to other companies (search, maps = google, etc.).
Plus, it wouldn't help them at all in international markets.
