I'm really interested in music videos that actually attempt to depict the music itself, rather than just provide some random eye candy to support the lyrics, if there are any. A bunch of fartknockers dancing around and trying to look cool while the band plays doesn't always provide much in the way of creative imagery that is inspired by the music itself.

So, I'm interested in your favorite examples of creative music videos that are preferably instrumental primarily, or at least otherwise look like some serious thought was put into how to provide visuals to the actual musical content.

For instance, Michael Jackson's Thriller video I think is brilliant. The topic is original, the content obviously complements the lyrics, and the spooky overtones of the music work well with the theme. Obviously this is classic, as is the Beat It video (although to a lesser extent, I think)... Here are some others I like:

YouTube - John Coltrane - Giant Steps

This is a funky illustrative Flash movie to accompany Coltrane's Giant Steps

Chick Corea (Talk about rare—this clip has barely seen the...)

This is an attempt to provide visuals to a sort of 20th century classical/jazz piece of music by Chick Corea and Gary Burton in a sort of artsy fartsy sort of way

Eternal Child by Chick Corea Elektric Band Music Video on Yahoo! Music

This one I'm not sure I completely connect with, but it is connecting the music to this story of this girl studying dance and improving over time

I realize that videos like this are not going to connect with everybody because we all see music differently, but I'm interested in seeing attempts similar to this because I find the whole concept of trying to provide visuals to music in an honest and creative way fascinating.

Of course, there are also the silent movies, older film scores such as Alexander Nevsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Nevsky_(film) , and of course all of the more modern film scores such as the John Williams stuff. All of this is also very interesting to me, but for the purpose of this thread since there are 283092348 films with great music I'm more interested in videos that were created to interpret music rather than the reverse.

Philip Glass and movies such as this:

Koyaanisqatsi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

are also great examples of this...

Something like this:

YouTube - Anti VideoSong - Jack Conte

But seriously, Jack Conte's stuff sounds like exactly what you're looking for, but your poor taste in...well....everything may make it hard to appreciate.

IIRC, that's a result of the draconian debtors' laws in Qatar.

Even fairly minor or innocently acquired debt can result in jail time. Especially commonly seen in economically hard times, it can be far preferable to just drop your belongings and hit the next flight out.

That decision seems consistent with Canada's hate speech laws, like them or not.

Well then, Canada's hate speech laws need to loosen up a little. That's the kind of thinking that gives us no other choice than to fill Huck Finn with robots.

I don't know...

Is there a more derogatory word for homosexuality than "faggot"? Maybe they should loosen up because everybody seems to toss the word around, but does that make this right?

I can't give you something for free. But seriously, his other videos are basically what you seem to be after - it's him showing at least basic proficiency on a wide
variety of instruments.

The desert is a perfect place for storing vehicles. That's why the military and airlines store aircrafts waiting to be resold or re-leased in the deserts of California or Arizona.
