Anywhere in the 48 states from Friday to Monday, this time of year. Bonus points if it's near a United hub. Where would you go?

We have 50 states.

Santa Barbara, CA

Brasilia flight from SFO or the LAX hublet, or driving distance from LAX if you'd rather not beat the sky to death.

Neither Alaska nor Hawaii is reasonable for a weekend trip when trying to minimize travel time. I suppose I should have said "continental."

Being gone for a month straight nets me a couple free days off and Wife wants some quality time. I have plenty of miles and hotel points so we can do it cheap. We're looking at possible places now.

What kind of stuff is important to you? Do you like outdoorsy stuff? City breaks? Excellent food?

Without that, some of my favorite places that might not suck in this weather: Olympic Peninsula, Washington. Tucson, Az. Savannah, GA. Santa Fe, NM. Doesn't really fit your bill, but damn close, Puerto Rico, I'm told, can be very cool.

What about Naples, Florida? I'll never forget walking on the beach, pelican on the wooden pier, rays swimming past and dolphins jumping in the background. Nice people around there as well, not too touristy if you know what I mean. The Everglades are nearby as well. I found the Keys to be over-rated.

I hate Florida and all it stands for (childhood trauma- no need to go into it), but if I had to go back (which I did a few years ago) it would be to St. Augustine. Very cool city- oldest in the US. If you stay downtown, you would almost never know you were in Florida. Also, I have a very good friend there who does custom jewelry- you could pick up something nice for the little lady.

^Agreed, St. Augustine was very nice. As is Naples.

Unless you ski, you probably don't want to come to New England around now...

What about Galveston, Texas? Coastal.

Ooo, Galveston's doable, there's a direct flight from DSM to Houston and a Holiday Inn right on the beach.

Try Tybee Island, we have a small place there and it's where we go to get away for a few days. It's a beautiful little town. Not much to do compared to other ocean front locales (unless you make the short run to Savannah), but it's very relaxing.

Recommending (as seen on MacNN): San Antonio TX. Especially if you've never been there.

Savannah, GA is a great getaway, as is Charleston SC. Asheville NC is fun.

Used to recommend New Orleans, but nobody knows, these days, what it means to miss New Orleans. It's a very scary place outside of an (even smaller) French Quarter area thanks to Katrina.

San Antonio, Texas

I think it's about time for the "Fiesta," a celebration of flowers and music. SA has a lot going for it, The Alamo, The Hill Country (bluebonnets marching up from the south) TexMex gritty and Romantic RiverWalk.

Good Times

This year Fiesta is April 7-17. It's a good time of year to visit, especially from a more temperate location. I think we're going to have a good crop of bluebonnets (always a plus) and the city is gearing up for plenty of party time with the parades and other activities. It's sort of like our version of Mardi Gras, without the emphasis on public intoxication (or public nudity, mores the pity).

Seaworld is open Thursday through Sunday through the spring, and spring is a great time to visit there, too. Plus there's the Hill Country, Fredricksburg, Austin (next week is SXSW) and lots more.

Plenty of hot Amish talent in NW Iowa, no need to visit PA for that. Wife does want to visit San Antonio sometime, her grandfather has recommended it before.

I think MacNN needs to program some sort of bot that automatically posts, "Pics or it didn't happen" after each and every one of Shaddim's posts.

Had this been the 80s, I would've suggested hopping on the Concorde for a nice weekend in Paris.
But there's no Concorde anymore, so open up some Chef Boy R Dee, put on the lingerie and wear a beret instead.

It really is a small place, one bedroom small (think little condo). And no, I wasn't handing out an invitation, sorry if it seemed that way. I like you, you're okay for someone I know solely through internet contact, but I don't want you and your wife having sex in our bed.

And if there's no internet access available in the room, rent an iPad or something with 3G. Better yet, get a satellite internet connection and put the satellite on your head. That way you can broadcast live.

I dont know if you've ever been there but the place is a crap hole like most of Texas. It's seriously dirtier than many places in Hong Kong. I vote for Puerto Rico. It's close, cheap and warm. Concisidor resort or something like that.

I wouldn't call Galveston a "crap hole," but it hasn't had a lot of time to recover from the significant devastation suffered in recent hurricanes. The beaches there aren't particularly friendly to "beautiful beach seekers," at the moment, in part because of the loss of a lot of beach land. South Padre is a better choice, with very nice beaches and plenty of accommodations, most of which are probably going to be taken up by Spring Break revelers for the next several weeks.

I was there for a day last summer. It's ok if there's nothing better nearby, particularly if you need to feel some beach sand and ocean water.

I've always enjoyed South Carolina beaches, Edisto and Hilton Head in particular are good for families. Myrtle Beach isn't as nice, but it's youth and party demo are high.
