I am friends with a "person" on Facebook that I believe is a fake account set up as a marketing device. I've read bits here and there about corporations making up fake people to both gather information from people that friend the fake profile and also to advertise their own products.

This person's name is extremely generic, there are no pictures of her on her profile, just a large group of sorority girls, the "personal" posts are few and far between and vague, but she appears to get tagged in another advertiser's picture several times per week; anything from Victoria's Secret to shoes to electronics.

I realize this could be completely legit but it just sets off warning bells in my head.

Who says you can't be friends with Nike Jordans? I also didn't realize that Nike Jordans came in high heels.

It was quite a while back - she added me and I accepted to see her profile and figure out who she was. Since then I've kept her as a friend out of curiosity.

Ish. None of the links are clickable, so the likelihood of them getting a page visit because of the image is almost zero. Except for olePigeon.

I bet there are fake facebookers, just like there are people paid to post reviews on Yelp, etc.

I once added a guy who friended me who seemed to be going around and friending any gay people he could find... he also offered to have sex with me and claimed to have a nine inch penis... me and a friend figured it was probably some sort of scam... he never did ask me for my credit card though.

If it's targeted at non-US groups, I don't see the problem. Information Operations are a standard part of 'full spectrum' military operations.

Jump into the Farmville discussions - *most* of the posters asking for neighbours are marketing profiles.

Did I just admit that I play Farmville? Ooops.

yes it clearly fake. It's a big industry for marketers to pose as girls to friend lonely guys who need to get their girl count up on the friends list.

Personal experience; Im a quick learner of the ways of the world. While Im not the type to have 100s of fb friends, at any given time there is 2-3 girls who've sent friend requests to me. Of course I know they're not really girls-who-want-to-be-my-friend because I dont know them so I just ignore them...but for other guys they usually just friend them..

It's just common sense. If you dont believe it and need proof just go to your friend list visit some of the guys pages you know for about 30 seconds and see how many girl friends they have who they dont know. To get some more insight to facebook culture Go to the girls pages on your friend list and count the ratio of guy friends they have to female friends. Girls have more guy friends, because guys are always trying to get their girl count up and befriending them... i dont know why... builds their self esteem or something.... Marketers are just trying to take advantage of this law of nature because they know how easy it is to get guys to friend girls...

edit: I forgot to add, I used to know somebody that did this kind of facebook marketing for poker sites.

So would that be "Pokerface Book?" Just curious...

Seriously, I don't know a lot of guys who have "people they don't really know" in their friends lists... And I "know" all the women on my list-relatives, close friends, colleagues, classmates.
