A month or so ago I grew frustrated with our inkjet printer and bought a new Samsung WiFi laser printer which I love.

The cheapest toner cartridges I've seen are around $50.

But every so often I see a story about how you can save a great deal of $$ if you refill your existing toner cartridges yourself. Does anyone here do it? Is it really messy? Worth the trouble? Is the output affected?

Any recommendations for the proper toner supplies?

Thanks in advance!

My suggestion is don't. Refilling toner cartridges is a pain in the ass and just not worth it. It only takes one toner cartridge to leak and you're in for hours of cleaning (and you will have one leak eventually.) Toner is extremely difficult to clean without a toner vacuum, which uses expensive high grade HEPA filters and a special storage container.

Keep in mind that with most printers you not only have to buy toner, but you also have to buy a new chip to reset the page count on the cartridge.

It's just not worth the time, effort, mess, or potential damage to your printer.

I've found a reliable source for remanufactured toner from Monoprice.

I haven't had any issues with their cartridges yet, and they're the cheapest around.

Seconded. Don't bother with it.

Your results with a cheap purchased toner will still be quite good. I think laser printer quality is far less influenced by the toner than inkjet printer quality by the cartridges.

I did this last year. A little suck up from the refill thing with a plastic needle injected it into the cartridge, good as new, or so I thought.

Whatever ink was in the refill didn't dry quickly enough, and while printing multiple page, the ink would smudge and get all over the back of the other pages. Since it didn't fully dry quickly, the cartridge would start getting clogged, and I could literally hear spurting noises. It also messed up the inside of my HP printer. Granted it was close to 3 years old at the time.

Now I just get the XL version of the ink that the printer that replaced the old one uses. $$$ but well worth it in the long run.
