So, the semifinals are over and the slate of contestants for the final is set. Who would you like to see win it this year?

As an aside, how the *HECK* did the dunce-cap wearing Moldavian band make it through to the finals? They were horrible! I thought Cyprus' entry was much better than Greece's this year, yet they didn't get through to the finals either.

And Germany? You think that by picking Lena as your singer for the second year in a row, you're going to win for the second year in a row?

I'm not sure I could see them all that well. The background being the same color as the costumes made it nearly impossible to see them. It's bad when the background upstages the performers.

They've got more of a chance with her than they would if they brought back that horrendous country group of a few years ago.

I dig Lena though - she's old school cute. Wholesome cute.

You make some good points there. As an aside, when my mother saw pictures of said "horrendous country group" from a few years ago the first thing she said was, "Yup, that's what Germans think cowboys look like."

The thing with Lena is that when she sings in English, she does this really weird pronunciation of the words. It's not just a "typical German accent." When she speaks it's just fine. So why the weirdness when singing?

That was entirely the point. The drummer is a rather popular comedian, for one.

Also, after having seen Lena's "winning" number (the national finals in Germany consisted of her singing five songs and the fifty interested people calling up and choosing the number that sounds like björk rejected it fifteen years ago), I completely lost any interest I might have been able to garner for this year's contest.

I thought the Cypriot entry was far better than the Greek one this year, yet the Greek entry made it to the finals but the Cypriot entry did not. Well, go Greece, I suppose.

I thought they were better in 2005 when they first debuted (it was the same band-- look up Boonika Bate Doba on YouTube). I thought the dunce caps were a little over the top, though.

I quite liked both France and Italy. As songs. Not as Eurovision entries—they were oh so very misplaced as Eurovision entries.

The Greek song vacillated between sheer brilliance and horrendous atrocity. That rap claptrap crap they had in it nearly made my ears bleed—but the Greek part of it was magnificent: it had an amazing rhythm and a powerful melody, and the guy had a good voice too.

Overall, I wanted Georgia or Sweden to win. Georgia because I loved the song; Sweden because it was so Eurovision, but it was still good.

Ireland should be banned from the contest for the next decade for that horrendousness, though. Almost as bad as that jumping Ukrainian aluminium disco ball a few years back (though that was actually a bit worse). Absolutely ghastly.

Yeah, my father's comments on that were: "1. They remembered to put the bouzouki in it, and 2. That rap ruined a perfectly good zeibekiko (that's what the rhythm was)."

I preferred Cyprus' entry myself.

I completely missed both semi-finals (swamped in classes—reading the Iliad, as it happens—and work), so I never heard the Cypriot one, only the Greek one.

YouTube obliges.

Just watched Ireland... OMFG, that's painful.

I'd have to vote for Moldova, just for novelty sake. Sounds like something Faith No More would do after getting fu**ed up.

Hm. Not bad, but having listened to the Greek one again (and realised that the rapping bit was actually less horrible than the bad speakers and loud party in the background made it out to be on the night), I still definitely like that one better.

I would have preferred the Cypriot one to be an actual duet, rather than just having the woman standing there going “aaaaaaaaahhh-aaaaaaahhh” like an idiot at the dentist all the time. She had a great voice, why waste it on backing choir sounds?
