I'm looking to buy a new DLSR and was wondering if anyone new if I will have problems with the HD movie side. Will it download ok into iMovie?

Advice, CANON!!!! I bought a Nikon and by far movie recording ability is MUCH better with a Canon especially if you want the ability to manually control it in movie mode.

I haven't had any problems importing into iMovie.

I have a sony with 1080p video.. but the video sucks. A lot of motion blur. Anyone know what features to look for in a camera that would address this? Is is video data rate, frame rate? or frequency?

Ive heard canons are good but no experience with one myself.

Could easily be the lens to. A good quality fast lens with a low F rating can make a world of difference in performance. The default lenses I have with my Nikon are OK but in order for me to get the video I want, I need to invest in a range of expensive lens that do a better job.

Also need to you at your settings. Automatic everything does ok video for home video of the children, but if your looking for high quality recording you have to do a lot with manual settings. This is where the Canon excels at while the Nikon is weak. The manual controls during video shooting are better on the Canons.

Memory card speed and performance affects some things too. A card thats to slow results in video issues. Can't think of the term for it. If your doing a pan shot and notice a wave in the image (again cant think of the term) but you can easily notice it, do a slower pan and speed up the video to get a smooth pan at a faster speed.

Shutter speed, for video, you want a minimum of 1/30, preferably 1/60 for fast action (sports, etc).

24p=1/50
30p=1/60
60p=1/120

This is the golden rule for shutter speed settings. Otherwise you will get smeary video or staccato motion because making your video look amateur and home video like.

I've always heard it called the "rolling shutter effect".

Canons look worse at higher ISO.
Canons have slower autofocus and a slower ~~shutter~~ mirror.

But... suck on my 50mm 1.2 there, Nikon boy.

heh I'll add to that, I think Nikon wins for photo taking. But I also think Nikon is lacking for Video. If you are doing photos you can not go wrong with either. But Canon has a absolute advantage if you are serious about doing video. My biggest grip with Nikon is the difficulty in manual control and some what limited manual control for Video. This appears to be a very common complaint with Nikon owners that Nikon has not taking video as seriously as it should of.

Thats my 2 cents for the Nikon / Canon war. Sony has some real nice Cameras to.

Not got a FF DSLR so I didn't waste my money on a 50mm. However my 35mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.4 are heavily used.

Anti-Canon line : what sort of idiot decides on a 1.3 crop factor anyway?

I loved the 1.6 crop on my 20D.

I like working at around 200mm* and using my 135mm f/2 as a 200 is heaven.

*I'd go longer, but I can't justify the $7K for it.

I like the DX crop factor (1.5) as well. While using wide angle stuff (10mm) is fun, after a while the distortion gets annoying to treat in post.

I've spent too much on DX specific lenses to go FF, but I'd love that high ISO, great DR in my next camera.

Sorry to derail the thread, not that interested in video. I like fooling around with time-lapse stuff though.
