I think it's great he came out and is being supported by Hollywood, but did anyone not know this? Not "heard rumors know", but "took one look at him know"?

Pretend it's a public poll.

I have terrible gaydar, but it was so obvious to me. You'd have to have Asperger's not to notice.

I want to say that in Heroes he was told "you know how women get creeped out by sexual predators? Use that gay vibe you give off to make straight guys who are watching feel the same way... but turn it up to 11".

If you had a reason to believe he was gay. I figured he was just obsessed with stuff to worry about vaginas. Most superhero villans are.

Do you think that Otis from the Christopher Reeves Superman series was gay?

I didn't necessarily think Sylar was gay, but it was obvious Quinto was.

Why does his sexual orientation matter? It's baffling to me why people are concerned about that kind of thing.

It's a guy, he likes other guys. I'm a guy, I like women. I also like pie, but for some reason that doesn't cause as much titillation.

I agree with Shaddim. I don't concern myself with other people's orientations, couldn't care less, none of my business.

I prefer women to pie, but pie is easier to persuade back home with you.

The thing is, people talk about their orientation, or things which are directly related, constantly. Despite saying it's none of your business, you'd be unusual if you weren't talking about it yourself.

No I don't. The only time I mention it is during threads like this that seem to get started on this forum so often. My comment, more often than not, is "why does it matter?".

Last month a guy I met literally introduced himself as, "Hi, I'm Carl, I'm gay". To which I replied, "Hi, I'm Michael, I'm straight". He was irritated by that, I'm not sure why.

Maybe he was trying to cut to the chase. Or give a friendly heads-up in case you frequently used gay jokes or slurs.

Because I talk about my family, like many old-timers on this forum often do.

Usually I make comments like, "My wife likes such-and-such" or say something about the baby, that kind of thing. I suppose it's the, "I'm gay and you need to know about it" type of thing that bugs me. It's the whole being gay defines everything about them and is the most important thing in their life. To me that seems rather one dimensional.

Last week we celebrated National Coming Out Day. I can't remember anyone ever coming out and saying that they're straight. Isn't that weird? It's like straight people don't really define themselves based on what sex they sleep with. Wow, what a concept.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing about how "gay" people are b/c I don't care who you lust for, but I don't need to hear about it - "gay" or otherwise.

When you're the norm, there's really no reason to underscore the assumed.

I wouldn't go that far. I feel like those that expound the the virtues of "Family Values" within the construct of "traditional" relationships and marriages are doing just that.

I'm pretty sure you hear about people being straight all the time, too. Unless people never talk about their significant others in your presence?

If you are a member of a minority that has in the past been defined and stigmatized based on a single characteristic, then yes, you are probably going to be inclined to declare that characteristic in an effort to normalize it. I don't see what is so difficult about this concept, as it applies to numerous other situations without becoming so politicized. Take anything from vegans/vegetarians/sustainable food advocates, to Yankees fans living in Boston. If you are "tired" about having to hear about gay people, then it seems to me like the normalization effort is not yet complete, your protestations aside.

I think the point of opening up by telling the public that you are gay is to encourage others to come out of the closet?

Skyler was also a pretty bad ass character, as was Spock. If he were Urkle maybe he'd keep it to himself?
