My MacBook Pro froze when I tried to play that trailer. When I got it back up again, I can see why...

I don't recall any aliens in the board game.

What has become of Liam Neeson? Does he have a coke habit to support that he can't take better movies?

I think liam neeson simply doesn't give a rats ass anymore as to what he does anymore, as long as he's working.

this is only a consequence I think of his wife dying from that ski accident a couple years ago.

If you pause he trailer when the alien cannonballs are in flight, they look like giant battleship pegs.

It's been down hill since Episode I.

He obviously attended the Michael Caine school of acting.

That may have accelerated it, but he was on this path already. After Episode 1, he several times made the point that with all the abilities for effects and cutting we have today, any movie became exactly what the director wanted, and that he has an actor had very little influence. The logical consequence of that is to just take the best paying job you can find.

It's been down hill since Episode I.
Excluding Batman Begins - and by the way, he's in the threequel, although I don't know how big the role is.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

Liam brings "gravitas" to this film. Which it needs, since the "story" is about at the level of a couple of 12 year old boys hyping each other into a frenzy over an old board game.

Still, it looks like it'll be a fun watch. Once. Preferably with a coupon.

Looks like another Battle Los Angeles, except on the ocean, and of course not as gritty.

I imagine it should make some money. You got some key concepts - aliens, mysterious encounter, naval battle, and young beautiful women. I have to watch the trailers again, I didn't see Rihanna.

I assume they're using the Battleship USS Missouri in the movie, as that's the closest one to where they were filming and I'm pretty sure that was a battleship in the trailer. The USS Missouri, must be the most filmed battleship.

Is anyone else getting bored of these formulaic blockbusters?

I watched Another Earth the other day, that was refreshingly different. I could say the same for Melancholia and Sleeping Beauty. Those two are also a bit odd, especially SB.

I liked the concept of In Time though it got a bit formulaic in its execution. Better than many though.

Another Earth was fantastic; check out Take Shelter if that's your speed (it's my fav movie of the year, hands down). Melancholia is on my list to see though it just hit theatres here last week and I haven't had a chance to get out to it yet.

I can enjoy a cheezy blockbuster, though, if it's done right. I actually quite enjoyed Immortals recently, for example, despite it's glaring flaws.

:guffaw:

Spitting Image ran with a Michael Caine "wants to be in every movie ever made" thing in the 90s. Vividly remember his puppet being in a someone's wedding video, and explaining the plot to camera: "Well, it's about this man, and this bloody woman..."

I really love stupid movies like this. Excited.

However, are there any *good* SciFi movies coming out soon?

I think it looks pretty slick too. At the end of the day it's a mindless Sci-Fi Action flick. Summer blockbuster. It's not supposed to win an Oscar! Have we seen plenty of "Alien Invasion" movies? Indeed. But I'm looking forward to the ocean twist that this one will have. The only downside is Rihanna. She's playing an FBI Agent on a naval battleship ... so I imagine the eye-candy factor will be severely diminished. Which means we'll have to see just how much of a train wreck her acting will turn out to be.

Oooo! I wanna see that movie. There wasn't a theatre within 50 miles that was playing it. I keep hoping it'll end up on NetFlix Instant Streaming.

"Good" sci-fi movies are tragically hard to find. I have some hope that Chronicle and Prometheus may be quality flicks, but aside from that there really doesn't seem to be much on the horizon.
