I purchased my 95 S6 Avant for $7500 a few years ago. Since then, the value has actually gone UP, as there were only 300ish imported, compared to 4-5k S4/S6 sedans. Last august, car in front of my drove OVER giant piece of truck tire, flung it into the air, and smashed my hood/bumper/grill. After getting a decent chunk of change to fix that, I also decided to replace a rusting fender, and repair a small rust patch on my door. And since I was doing the hood, bumper, fender, and door... I just said **** it and had them do the whole thing. My paint sucked originally, it was resprayed really poorly at some point, and whoever did it sanded out a lot of the character lines in the car, as you can see here:

And note the reflections in the paint here, how dull and fuzzy they are:

So... here are some sweet photos:

I am looking at painting my truck soon, did you have any automotive painting experience? any advice for someone who has never done it.

I plan on two stage white, so not terribly difficult.

If you stripped the whole thing why on earth would one choose to repaint it that hideous 90's green-blue color again?

a) because it's actually nice.

b) because it's stock, and this is about "restoration".

While I never liked what passed for a wagon in the 90s, that sure looks good. The restoration was great-it looks like it rolled off the showroom floor this week.

Wait...so everyone thinks rust repair and a paint job qualifies as a "restoration"?

LOL! Hi Laminar. You are such a beacon of positive energy. How's your shit-tastic ford?

Oh, for the record:

New lower front bumper, LLTek.
New Hella E-code headlight lenses
New weatherstripping
The glass and doors were pulled except the windshield
New hatch
Polished taillights
POR15'd suspension components
H&R race springs with Bilstein Sport Dampers
All new suspension bushings
Apikol Short Shifter
Samco intercooler/turbo hoses
Apikol HO coil upgrade
Porsche 911 Calipers
A8 Rotors

But yeah it totally sucks I wish I had a ford contour instead.

I think the details in the "in progress" photos were lost on some people. It looked to me like the rust repair was incidental to a "restoration" paint job.

How are the calipers and rotors different from the stock S6 parts? It sounds like the suspension will be a lot firmer, but smoother (new bushings, springs, dampers), but is the stock steering going to keep up with that? The one complaint my Audi super fanatic enthusiast coworker had was that every Audi he'd had tended to be "sloppy" (his words) in tight turns at speed. Having seen how fast he drove, I would have to say he should have known what he was talking about.

The one that you've talked up on so many occasions? The one that when I purchased, you proudly (and incorrectly) claimed responsibility for introducing me to? The one I sold three years ago? I see it every now and then, the new owner put a hoodscoop on it, so I'd say not well. How's your Neon? Why do you keep coming back to a place that you "quit" 11 years ago? Because it's stupid, boring, and dying?

Be the bigger man. You start taking the jabs, then act innocent when Rob goes into his normal overreact mode. Isn't it getting old?

In other news, someone on MacNN actually does something cool and wants to share it. It's either Lam, someone that was banned a long time ago, or someone that no longer posts.

We wonder why this place is boring and dying?

Hey...I do awesome shit too. It's just that no one will want to discuss the boring details of how some company was reorganized and purchased another company, and I'm not allowed to talk about it even if it was remotely interesting.

At the end of the day, guys like you and Rob are the ones building and chronicling the interesting shit that other people appreciate and wish they could do. There's not too many of you left around here, unfortunately. I dream of having the space for a dedicated theatre room - go update that thread instead of baiting Rob.

I think, the boundaries between "restoration" and "repair" are in a state of flux...

Agreed.

My point about the green metallic paint went out the window when he posted the list of upgraded parts.

Except for the part about that green actually being a rather nice colour.

'cept, it's a chick. of course. Ahem. Yeah, so anyway, my friend bought a pair of those, but not sure what year. Looks about the same lines. He said he paid $1500 for the pair. One had been in a collision and the front end (and engine) was wrecked. The other had had a tree dropped on it from behind, but the engine was excellent. He basically pulled the doors and chopped the roof of one of them and stuck em on the other, cleaned it up, and gave it to his wife for a winter car. (He had given her summer car the year before: a similar resto on a 70's convertible Beetle). Both are gorgeous, as is yours!

This is so inspirational. FYI an S4 (same chassis as my car, slightly different trim/bumpers) is now the fastest sedan IN THE WORLD, EVER. Can't wait to afford a new snail....

Every definition I've been able to find anywhere says enclosed car with two rows of seats for four or more people, with two or four doors.

That's correct. It's the seating and cargo layout of the car (3-box design), not the number of doors.

Two door sedan:

That's the problem with trying to discuss US policy with foreigners who are only here to argue. We take
these issues to heart, because this is our country and we love it, they're here for the entertainment value.

This isn't a stock class. This is the unlimited class. The body cannot be altered much at all, but the drivetrain, interior, suspension, are all up for grabs. You aren't required to retain the same # of occupants as stock.

Yeah, but that's more confusing than anything, especially when the only visual difference is presence of a B pillar to separate the coupes from 2 door sedans.

I mean, according to that notion, this is NOT a coupe

but this is:

Like I said, that's ****ing dumb. The cars are almost identical. Sedan = 4 doors, for all intents and purposes.

So, according to the link you just posted, you're actually wrong, but you just don't care because the technically correct explanation is stupid.

Read the link. Specifically the last paragraph. I'm not going to argue with you. If you want to argue for the sake of arguing, keep on going but you look like a complete ****ing idiot. Seriously, google "race sedan" and every photo is a ****ing four door car with ONE god damn seat (excluding rally cars), but apparently Spheric ****ing Harlot the multitude of racing organizations are completely wrong, yet he is correct.

Fat ****ing chance.
