I just heard the story.... Actually, I'm not surprised, don't know why.

IMHO, not the smartest thing to say JUST before you're about to start 30+ years in prison.

I can just imagine the jokes.

I think it highlights that he's not the most mentally stable person.

I imagine he's been through a great deal, and I've never even heard him speak. Probably turned to mush at this point.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Gotta admit this trumps the routine "I've found Jesus" scam that pervades most prisons.

I find myself wondering about the food they fed him during 3+ years of detainment without charges. On top of the constant solitary, and the no-clothes, no-dignity policy. It would be convenient for the government if Manning started doing/saying unusual things right around trial.

How do I put this... he may legitimately be a woman in a man's body, but after all he's been through and his two somewhat conflicting statements (to the court and then the president) wanting to change your identity after this kind of traumatic experience isn't unheard of.

This is the cause of my question about the wig being reported. Today was the first I've heard Manning joined the Army to "cure" his TG leanings, and that was part of his defense.

Was this being reported all along but I missed it?

I guess this side of him was kept quiet, to avoid any negative (or positive) influence.

Honestly, I haven't followed anything about it, short of him being convicted on all but the aiding terrorists charge.

Me too, but don't you feel these are the kind of details the media likes to force you to be aware of?

Like they are right now.

I think this was hidden to avoid any sympathy for him.

I remember reading about this years ago, but I never saw it migrate to the mainstream. So it seems like it has always been an issue for her, not something that is the result of torture/stress/etc.

I'm a cyborg trapped in a human's body, and the government needs to pay for my species reassignment. They have the technology, they can make me better, stronger, faster.

Google sez CNN ran the story in 2011, but that's it for the big players.

I'm not sure what to make of that.

Ditto. I'm glad it wasn't dragged out as much as it could have been.

That would be my normal response, but I'm not sure there's a real difference between it getting dragged out then and getting dragged out now.

Frex, USA Today just put up an article about how society views being TG.

That's a good thing, right?
