Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

EDIT : In pre-market trading on Wall Street, Microsoft shares surged 8%.

Mwahahahahahahahahaha !!!

So good. I don't like Microsoft as a company, but the company has seriously languished under the command of Balmer. They missed many technological opportunities. Sure, their revenue has increased a lot under his tenure, but their competitors have all passed them by.

He's barely out the door and we already have three threads discussing this...
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Thank. God.

Although I couldn't think of anyone else more qualified to single handedly destroy Microsoft, we shouldn't really be celebrating his departure.

It has to be hard on Ballmer's ego to see the shares of the company he's running surge 8% on news of his impending retirement. But since that adds up to a cool $1 billion in his own pocket I'm sure he'll get over it.

When the CEO of a company announces his retirement with no clear successor obvious, he's being forced out or has some sort of medical emergency. If it had been medical, he wouldn't have stayed on to manage the transition. The board finally overruled Gates on this and decided it was time to switch. Either the Surface writeoff or something we don't know about yet (Xbone preorders?) was the final straw. What the stock does right now is probably beside the point for uncle Fester - he was kicked out of a company he has spent almost all his professional life at.

Good riddance. He's always been the millstone tied around their neck, maybe they'll stop drowning now.

I own quite a few shares of MSFT just for the dividend. The 7% pop today was nice for sure, but is not convincing me to sell. I'm in it for the long-term. On a somewhat ironic note, I do not own any long-term AAPL shares as I believe their stock price is more volatile.

After the Monkey Boy video, I've long hoped someone in Security would leak the Chair-throwing video. I'd be in favor of Ballmer staying on, if he'd just let more of the good stuff out.

Not that it's a surprise, but Swish claims Bill ultimately ordered Fredo Steve to take the fishing trip.

I'm sure the actual story will leak eventually, but the one theory that I've seen around is that Nokia is basically out of cash and being pushed by investors to switch to Android. Elop doesn't want to do that, but he's being pushed pretty hard. Now Ballmer leaves, creating even more doubt about WinPhone 8, and the pressure increases. Elop proceeds to tell his MS buddies that he can't hold the line any longer, and MS decides to avoid being dumped by the only real ally they have. They get a good price, and a CEO candidate in the bargain.
