I've recently set up a local business with a friend of mine and we've been talking about setting up a website but neither of us knows much about web design, hosting etc. We had social media pages but think at this stage we should set up a site. Does anybody have any experience doing this? We've done a bit of research and are considering using 1&1 as our host server. Has anybody used them? Got any tips? As neither of us really know what we're doing we need something that is easy to use and set up but looks professional. We would really appreciate any advice or tips anybody might have?

Check out one of the templated services, like Wordpress or Squarespace. They allow you to put together a good looking site with little to no technical knowledge.

I am using Squarespace, and I am very happy. I could spend time and make a website myself, but don't quite see the point, I'm busy enough as-is.

I seem to recall people not liking 1&1. I use dreamhost and no problems thus far.

Squarespace, Weebly, Wix, Strikingly, and WordPress are all worth checking out.

Mediatemple would definitely be in the mix of shared hosting providers I would look at, if I needed one (I run my own VPSes, so I don't). I'm not a fan of the shared hosting providers that try to work on extremely high volumes at very low prices, GoDaddy and Dreamhost included.
