Hi all,

I'm having a problem under Leopard (I upgraded from Tiger, didn't do a clean install) with a lot of Desktop clutter. Basically it seems as if my desktop is a dumping ground for files that should go into the downloads folder.

For example, I open up a lot of word/pdf documents directly from my email program (Thunderbird) as well as from Firefox using the "open with Preview" option. Every time I do this though, the file is saved to my desktop automatically instead of in a temporary folder (or the downloads folder). This creates a lot of clutter on my desktop that I have to clean off twice a day or so.

Is there anyway to change this behavior? Most people I have spoken to have done a clean install of leopard and these files get saved to their downloads folder. I have a downloads folder, but it doesn't seem to be working the same way.

Change the download location in those apps.

Nope, that's not the solution. When I'm in firefox and I click on a pdf, I use the "open with Preview" option, not the "save file to disk" option. Changing the download location is only if I'm saving the file to disk before opening it.

My problem is that when I click "open with Preview", a copy of the file is always saved to my desktop. I think this is an OS X problem and not a firefox/thunderbird problem.

No, it's an app problem. The file has to be downloaded somewhere first before it can be opened by Preview. If Firefox/Thunderbird aren't respecting their own download location pref for these cases, then it's a bug in those apps.

I don't see why you think this is an OS X problem. The OS can't do anything to force Firefox to put things on the desktop — that's Firefox's choice.

Go into Prefs in Firefox and change the default download location.

My prefs are set so that the downloads folder is the default in firefox but like I said this preference only works for when I choose to save the file. It doesn't respect that preference when I open the file with preview from within firefox.

Report a bug to the Firefox developers.

It's definitely not an OS issue.

You might want to track down and delete the FireFox Preferences. I didn't see FireFox prefs in my Preference folder, but maybe someone here knows. This sounds like the type of problem that a pref dump can fix.

Firfox behaves correctly for me. If the download folder is set to the Downloads folder, then it downloads to the Downloads folder to open the PDF with Preview. Try trashing the Firefox preferences in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox, restart Firefox and set the download folder in its preferences dialog again. That should fix your issues (and delete your bookmarks).

Alternatively you can use Safari. It works fine in there too.
