Internet Sharing problem

I have an iBook connected to a PowerMac. The latter is connected to the rest of the world via USB ADSL and I was trying to share this internet connection with my iBook. A standard ethernet cable between the 2 computers worked well for file sharing but I could not get the internet sharing to work - I've tried both via the internet sharing option in system prefs (both computers are running jaguar) and via the internet sharing option in Brickhouse (again installed on both)
I've also tried both DHCP and manually setting IPs (though I'm not sure I did the latter one correctly, however I was expecting DHCP to work effortlessly)
When DHCP was set - the iBook was self-assigning an IP address which I took as a sign that it was not getting one from the PowerMac
Anyone had similar problems with sharing? And anyone has a fix or any suggestions?
thanks

Your iBook was probably not getting the IP address through DHCP. Make sure DHCP is set, and Internet sharing is active on the Power Mac. I had to restart my PC (which was using the shared connection of my Mac) to get a valid DHCP address.
On my Mac, DHCP addresses assigned when Internet sharing is on looks like 192.168.2.x
and the netmask is 255.255.255.0.
Not sure if this is always the case...

I had this same problem when I initially set up my router. My iMac self-assigned an IP address which the router could not recognise. It turned out it was a "glitch" with the router (Nokia IP 55) itself and Mac OS 10.2. This was easily fixed by telling the iMac to configure manually on the router network settings, and then entering the IP address (in my case 192.168.1.3). It then picked up from the router (IP 192.168.1.1) and all was well. Your subnet mask should read 255.255.255.0 and your router IP adress 192.168.1.1. Enter 192.168.1.1 in your DNS Servers box and you should be up and running instantly.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Probably because most of us have given up on USB ADSL. I'm not trying to rub in the fact that they're crap, merely pointing out that an ADSL router is so much better, if you have yet to hear it before.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that while I did experience the same problem, it was with an ADSL ethernet router, not a USB device. So I'm not sure whether the fix I suggested is relevant to you or not.
Sorry.
I have to agree with Simon X. USB broadband devices are junk. I had one (a ghastly Alcatel squashed frog) which caused me no end of difficulties. Since biting the bullet and spending about £100 on a proper ADSL router about 6 months ago, my life has been transformed.

indeed - the reason that I want to share the connection is because I do not want to install the Alcatel frog drivers on my iBook (bad experience with that myself) - unfortunately the ISP at my home are dumb enough not to supply anything else other than the USB frog.
I try out all your suggestions - thx

Actually I suspect the problem is from the PowerMac which is the one connected to the modem rather than the iBook - one weird thing which is happening is that when I switch internet sharing on, it will automatically switch off again when I switch to and fro other tabs in the System Prefs or if I quit and reload System Prefs
