I am hooking my finace's parents up to a hub from their cable modem. Their PC is working just fine, but the iMac (also connected to the hub) is not able to connect to the internet.
I have asked it for the DHCP server, asked it to refresh, tried different ports on the hub, different ethernet cables, restarting, etc.
Can someone please help me? I would be really grateful.
Thanks.

if you're using a hub, and don't pay the ISP for a secondary IP address, you won't be able to surf on both computers at the same time.
the better way to do this would be to buy a router and it will then assign the necessary IP's for both to surf simultaneously.

ah, you may have hit the nail on the head. I will shut down the PC...and reply from the iMac (hopefully).

you have to restart your cable modem, unplug the PC from the network, make sure the iMac get's the IP number, replug the PC ...
If your ISP is a MoFo they tagged your PC's MAC (not Macintosh) address so only the PC can recieve a valid IP ...

another thing you might want to try is Internet Connection Sharing. it exists on both OS X.2 and WinXP. from what i've read, the OS X implementation has to be restarted every time the machine is rebooted. not sure about XP's version. with both, however, i believe that a hub is all you'll need and whichever computer is benefitting from ICS, you'll have to set the IP settings accordingly. apparently you won't even need an extra network card on either machine.
if you decide to go this route, you might be able to search for more detailed info. when i get back to my setup at home, i'll check to see what more info i can give you.
but again, the method (albeit the more expensive one) i recommend is getting a router (linksys, d-link, ... there are tons of them ~ $50) which would also give them the benefit of NAT (network address translation) which offers a basic form of firewall protection. plus it works indepently of each computer- one doesn't have to be on for the other to access the net.

Internet Connection Sharing did it! Thanks for all of your help and input. Both machines are happily up and running.
These forums have NEVER let me down. Thanks again!
