Hi all,

my question is quite simple: IF I buy a TIbook in January, it won't have OS9 installed - but will it be possible to install OS9 on this machine - in other words, if I take someone else's OS9 CD and install the 9.2 system from there, will this work? Or will there be some internal settings that will prevent people from doing so?

Thanx for any input!

Only new models will not be able to boot in Mac OS 9, and I don't think that Apple will release new PowerBooks in January.

Furthermore I would expect that all machines will have Mac OS 9 installed next year as Classic - new models just can't boot from it.

So does that mean that only models released at or after Macworld will be affected by the osX only policy? That would in fact be good news. The way I understood it was that ALL machines purchased on or after that date will come with OSx only ---- Classic doesn't interest me as I use computers for making music, audio sequencing etc and these programs (LOgic audio, Reaktor etc) don't run in classic.

Anyone care to comment?

cheers,
Best regards,

I thought Apple backed down on this, though, since education and pro markets still don't have all their apps carbonized (eg Quark).

They didn't back down, they just announced that they will keep a few of the current models alive for six months - new models will still not be able to boot in Mac OS 9.

So, to rephrase my question, will all Powerbooks available now (the 1 Ghz and 867 Mhz models) boot into both 9 AND X until new, updated models will be available?
And, if not, will it be possibel to INSTALL the OS9 system from a CD/DVD that one gets from someone who owns a system bought prior to 1 January 2003?

I'm not sure if my questions are hard to understand or if I'm missing something very obvious, but I'm talking about Powerbooks bought NEXT YEAR, the current model line.

I'm asking so feverishly because JLL's statement
"Only new models will not be able to boot in Mac OS 9, and I don't think that Apple will release new PowerBooks in January."

doesn't seem to be what I heard on the Mac-related news channels (i.e. that all Macs bought after that date will be OSx only...=

Apple left it ambigious, but it's logical that only new, updated models after January 03 will not be able to boot into OS 9.

So, until the Powerbook is updated, yes, it will be able to boot into OS 9. Apple just isn't going to force people to download some kind of firmware update for existing models.

If Apple does update the Powerbook early, though (say, with Bluetooth) than it won't. This is unlikely to happen as early as MWSF, but not impossible.

Um, you've been answered, a few times now. New, updated models will still have OS 9 on them, running as Classic.
But they will not be able to boot into OS 9. This will be in the ROM and not changable w/o some major hacking.

Actually, Jobs said it very clearly in Paris that new and/or updated models will be unable to boot into OS 9 after 1/3/03.

Also, regardless of whether or not there is a firmware hack to disable OS 9 booting, new machines won't boot OS 9 unless there are new OS 9 enablers written for that model, specifically a new Mac OS ROM file. This is the way it's been all along. Even a stock Mac OS 9.2.2 install won't boot any of the currently available Macs. The current Macs need updated Mac OS ROM files and other extensions to be able to boot OS 9.2.2. Actually, Mac OS X is the same way too. Mac OS X 10.2.1 won't boot the new iBooks and PowerBooks. You need the newer, special build of 10.2.1 that shipped with these models to boot them.

Thanx a lot for the clarification all - and sorry for the fierce, penetrating asking.
