I think PowerOn Software should re-release GoMac for OS X with all new aqua style.. well.. everything! I miss GoMac, it was by far my favourite utility. Although we can't rely on a company to bring us what we want, maybe someone else should make their own version! I could try and help out with the GUI with some photoshop work. I bet there's someone out there better than me for the job though

Whaddya all think?

buy a pc? ha! ahaha! oh my... no seriously, the task bar from windows can be very useful. i dont like having a shitload of icons just sittin in the dock. nobody here used GoMac? i think an aqua style task bar, with better freatures maybe, would be a damn cool utility. why not have the best of both worlds?

I used to use it off an on, it can be very useful, but I haven't missed it since the dock was introduced, and I think the dock would interfere with a taskbar anyway.

If you need more organization than the one provided with the Dock, you could use DragThing and customize it as you desire.

Just make a new folder full of all the crap you use and stick that in Dock. Then you got all the start menu you need.

that's true. ive been testing out dock extender and its not too shabby. i wish the menus from the docklings could have icons in them. that would be soo sweet! does anyone know of some other good launchers? maybe one that puts some icons in the menubar (ah the days of task menu bar)?

im new to osx (the first version i got was jag) so i dont know too much of the new software. or where to get some good themes for that matter :S

Some of the best lanchers for Mac OS X are (IMHO):

- DragThing
- MaxMenus
- TigerLaunch
- LaunchBar

Those four apps bring very different solutions to the "lauching prolem" so i suggest you to try them all and see which one suits your needs better. You can download all of them from VersionTracker.

I highly reccomend LaunchBar...

I've only been using it 3 days, and I don't know how I survived without it before!!

I missed out on Tiger Launch, but looked it up, and it looks pretty cool. I also use FruitMenu, so I am still kinda using a bit of the ole OS 9 way of operating.

I used to use GoMac in the OS9 days, although once the early DPs of OSX came out I was pretty strongly favoring A-Dock... I can't say that I miss the GoMac taskbar now though, between the dock, column view, and Fruit Menu. I use a peecee at work, so maybe my jones is satisfied that way, though...

The task bar would also have to LOOK OSX-y, for my money. It would have to be an aqua (but theme-sensitive) implementation of the taskbar. I'm no graphic artiste', but someone might know what that might look like...

Actually, that's DragThing's process dock.
As i stated on a previous post, DragThing can be customized to look like a dock, a taskbar, or anything of that sort.

GoMac was the sh*t back in OS 9. I don't see myself using it in OS X, though.

I kinda liked GoMac but it tried to do too much...

All I want it an app switcher (like the horizontal app switcher you can get in OS9) and a simple start menu with Shut Down, Logout, Programs, Home
In vino veritas.

As it stands, I avoid PowerOn products all together. There was a problem using the AirPort control strip module in GoMac, and I e-mailed them about it. They responded by sending me an e-mail indicating there is NO problem. I did everything their e-mail stated and also tested the exact setup on multiple machines, the problem DOES exist. When I replied to them indicating that none of their fixes worked, they sent me back a copy of the EXACT same e-mail they sent me the first time. Even though I had to jump though hoops to be sure I replied to them properly... They simply read 2 sentences and assumed I was saying AirPort doesn't work with GoMac installed, when what I was really saying is that GoMac was not displaying the AirPort control strip module properly. Basically when it's in the GoMac bar, you CAN'T CLICK IT! It acts like a control strip with NO functionality. One simple thing and they don't even take 2 seconds to read my e-mail or even try it for themselves... I even awarded them with my un-prestigious numskull award!!!

GoMac was 1000 times better when it was still under Proteron Software... BTW, doing a search on the net returned this, dunno how old it is though...

I asked about this very software at MWNY 01'. They claimed to be investigating its release then but were clearly more focused on other products. As many other pointed out here, as much i liked GoMac in OS 8/9, there's just much less interest in post-Dock days.

I'm not a big fan of Proteron since about a month ago they sent me an email accusing me of using a pirated serial for their product MaxMenu's when I've never, ever, ever, ever even downloaded the app and have never even used it. Retards.
