I have been having a bit of trouble importing in iPhoto. I try and import images of the hard drive , its mostly stuff i get from the web, thus its in jpeg format. Below is an error message I get and do not know what to make out of it other then this cry for help. Thanks in advance.

Error Message:
" Unreadable Files : 1" then
" The following files could not be imported ( they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."

I tried importing jpeg and photoshop files, so I am confused as to what this thing expects from me?

I came back to add to this message, allow me to kill two birds at once so to say. I would appreciate any one who knows where online I may find a guide to OS X, since I am a newbie MAC ways are not as inuitive to me as they are to some of you. I want to try finding some free guides first before I spent money on something like ("MAC OS X for DUMMIES" and all the yellow you can handle). Thanks again.

Are you sure your files are not corrupted? Did you try to open them with Preview ?

Yes, my preview opens all the files just fine, that makes it even more weird that iPhoto behaves the wayit does.

Click once on one of the icons.
Go File > Get Info (or command + i).
Go to Name & Extension.
Make sure the proper extension is there, like .JPG. If not add it.

These should just be there, but if you got the files from some web site, well, it's hard to say...

The extensions are there, but I still get the same problem.

Well I solved the glitch iPhoto was throwing my way. Just for anyone curious, do not download your graphic files to the same hard disk location you will be importing them through iPhoto, not that anyone would. But apparently apple did not develop an option to overwrite through iPhoto. Thanks to all who attempted to help.

I had the same problem...I think it occured when I used ExecutiveSync to sync two iPhoto libraries: my files were in my Pictures library, but nothing showed up in my album. Reimporting them got the
The following files could not be imported ( they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
note.

So I copied the directories to a different drive, and then imported the photos from this drive. Seems to have worked.

I have some images taken on a Fuji camera that will not import into iPhoto. I get the error described when I try. Strangely I can preview them but iPhoto doesn't like them.
