This morning I logged into my OS X account, and after about 15 minutes I started to hear this sound:

http://homepage.mac.com/dark3lf/.Public/wineyun.wav

This is a sound I captured from the Mac's speaker btw, not my voice.

It startled me at first because I wasn't sure wat it was, which application it came from or if it actually came from the Mac. A few minutes later, I heard the sound, so now I am sure it came from the Mac. I did some investigating and found that it happens whenever I click the Apple menu or the application name right next to it. It will also occur when I press a random button (but always the same button) in a given application.

Anyone know what this is? Is this happening to anyone else? Is it some Apple engineer's idea of a joke? Do I have a *gasp* virus?!

I wish it were so, no one as admin access to this box but me. Weird, I logged out and then in again and I haven't heard it again yet.

If you hear it again, go to ProcessViewer and see if there's anything unusual running on your machine.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

If you're *not* messing with us, then this is the funniest 'virus' I've ever heard of - if indeed it is one.

Kudos to the programmer

I seriously don't think that this is a virus or Apple engineers' idea of a joke. But is strange nonetheless. I wonder what the Apple guys would say if you brought it in.

Heh, I swear to you that it's not a joke . I spent all day trying to figure out what exactly happened, but after I logged back in, wineyun never appeared DESPITE the fact that I'd been hearing it for hours (I couldn't log out because I was working on a project). I should really have been looking for errant processes right at the start but that didn't occur to me until much later. If it happens again, I'll certainly let everyone know. Until then, look out (or listen) for wineyun!
