This might be a great feature too, a way to make the default auto arrange side, or etc.
On windows it auto arranges to the left, on OS X the right.
Funny I still am used to having the icons on the left. I guess it's one of those home-sickness things (EVEN AFTER USING MACS FOR OVER A YEAR! :rolls eyes
Anyway. What to do?! This sounds like a really nifty idea. Where you could have them arrange to the top, left, right, or heck, even bottom.
A silly thought yes, but one to think about

Well you could just drag your desktop items over to the left, McZ – if that's what your saying?

Heh. The original reason was (and is) that since most people leave their open windows on the left, and that new windows open from the left, the right side of the screen will be less cluttered, so you can see "through" to the desktop more easily there. Hence, arranging those icons on the right. In short, it makes them a little more accessible.

Yes, but at the very least the columns (on the right, Apple style) should auto-arrange themselves so that the leftmost one is always the "first" one: in a few words, they should shift towards the left as elements are added, once the rightmost column is "full", thus preserving the (intuitively left-to-right) "by name", etc. ordering.
The best thing of all would, of course, be complete, user-defined customisability as to how and where place the icons!

The default with icons left justified is something I have always HATED about windows and have never understood. The majority of people are right handed, hence the mouse has to travel less to click on icons that line up on the right with a Mac and usually in a single plane . Icons located in windows on the left especially high on the screen require the mouse to transverse diagonally or farthest away from where the mouse pointer should be. Yes, you can leave mouse pointer over to the left, but being right handed it feels like your working with your arms crossed. BACKWARDS, exactly the way the rest of windows works, that is when you can get windows ito work.

I realize my post will not provide a direct solution to your problem, but first I must ask: for what reason do you use the desktop?
Maybe it would help if you used the dock by dragging the desktop icon in your home folder to the dock. A right click on that and you can access the desktop. That's what I have done- it's quite useful.

Mac Zealot: I've been using Path Finder (it's a replacement for the OSX Finder or you could run both). There is an option for displaying the icons from Left to Right under View-Icon Layout. You can find Path Finder
here
MacOSX Hints has instructions to replace the OSX finder with PathFinder. But the link was for the older version of PathFinder (called SNAX). Also, there are some things to watch for like you lose the (Control-Click or Right-Click) option to pull up desktop pictures and you also lose control over emptying the trash from the dock. So right now, I actually have both running. Since I have TinkerTool, I can "quit" the OSX Finder. I wish there was a way to switch them out AND keep my right-click options & trashcan control. But those two are the only minor drawbacks that I'm aware of so far. Maybe PathFinder will be a temp solution for your agony. It's not perfect, but it would allow you to organize your icons from Left to Right at the top.
