I've been using palm desktop for the past 6 months with my handspring visor and now I've just updated to jaguar. I decided to download ical and see what it's all about.
Can anyone tell me the differences between ical and palm desktop in terms of use with my pda? I've synced my pda with ical and there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between using ical and palm desktop. Maybe i'm missing out on something or I'm too lazy to learn how to use iCal! BTW, I don't use .mac or ichat, etc. Basically, why is iCal supposed to be so good? I also have an ipod but don't think I'll use it to carry around contacts etc since I carry around my pda and my mobile phone.

- the ical (not icalendar) format (a standard) is very nice. You can share ical files over the internet. Even other applications can make use of it. Mozilla callendar project for windows and linux for example.
- perfect integration with address book
- nice looking

it has its bug, I already think it is better than PalmDesktop

Well both Palm Desktop's and iCal's features are similar (the calendar parts obviously). And I haven't noticed much difference except ical will work with isync. I've been using iCal before I got my pda and I prefer it over Palm Desktop. They're both good programs though.

Besides considering how the apps stack up today, you might want to project a bit into the future. Palm has seemed less and less interested in the Mac market over the last year or more. It took them forever to move PalmDesktop over to X, and some people still complain about unaddressed bugs, etc.

My bet is that Apple will continue to improve iCal (and iSync) at a decent pace, but I don't give Palm the same credit. The Mac will always be the also-ran in its eyes, and who needs that??

I say that if iCal/iSync also do what you want, then make the switch now, rather than later...

I'm using iCal now instead of Palm Desktop but to be fair, there are some good reasons why it probably took Palm a long time to release Desktop. Most importantly, all of these synchronization types of software hook into the computer and OS at a lower level than the average piece of software. Not only would the learning curve be steeper for platform porting but Apple was making some significant changes to the underbelly of the OS X, too, during this phase.

I'm using iCal instead of my Palm Desktop. The only real problem I have with it is that there is no correspondance between iCal calendars and Palm catergories for To-Do items.

One difference is that iCal doesn't really have anything corresponding to the memo pad that Palm Desktop and Palm devices use.

I use Palm over iCal simply because palm is a better fit with the way I work than ical. My work rarely has to be done at a particular time but it does need to be done on a particular day. In the week view Palm has a to do list attached to each day, this way I can see what I did yesterday, should do today and attempt to plan for tomorrow. The to do list is saved so that I have some clue as to what Ive been doing over the yrs.

maybe not, but notes attached to calender events will be synched between the two (iCal <-> Plam).

Me, i prefer iCal. but maybe that's because i was using it before i got a palm, and i haven't played with PalmDesktop much.
