Because the localized InfoPlist.strings contains the wrong (old) version info.
Run your system in English.

What do you exactly mean by "run your system in English", only to run the Software Update?

Yeah you backwards-ass non-English-speaking bloke! What makes you think you have the right to have your computer operate in your favorite language? Just because you paid $100 or more and this was one of the advertised features doesn't mean you are allowed to actually do it! Silly foreigner.

Err, Developer, don't you think that maybe you should have told the guy how to fix it instead? I expect that sorta thing from say, Guy Incognito, but not you...Geez...

Anyway, bust out your favorite text editor (make sure it preserves line endings or at least make sure it saves plain UNIX text files) and follow along:

Find your iTunes app in the Finder, right (control)-click on it and select "Show Package Contents".

Navigate to Contents/Resources/<language you use>.lproj/

Open the InfoPlist.strings file in your text editor of choice.

Locate the key "CFBundleShortVersionString" and change the value in quotes to "3.0.1".

Optionally, you can change "CFBundleGetInfoString" to reflect the proper version, but this is only for aesthetics.

Just to be on the safe side, delete the files in /Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches with the words "IntlDataCache" and "LaunchServices.LocalCache" in the file names, then log out and back in.

Hopefully this will stop Software Update from nagging you.

Wouldn't you think it's up to Apple to fix this? If they annoy 40% of their customers they should notice that eventually.

OK, I understand (and agree with) your point of view perfectly now, though you should have been a little more clear on that. Perhaps suggesting the obligatory Apple feedback link would be more helpful than jokingly pretending to be a biggot?

Certainly, anyone annoyed by this issue should complain, and complain loudly. However, I do not draw a line between a dissatisfied customer and an educated customer. You can be both.

I prefer to think of it this way:

If Apple takes the "If a customer can fix our broken product, why should we bother fixing it?" approach, then more people will simply have more reason to complain more loudly.

You're very welcome! Provided people actually take time to do QA on their products before shipping, you should never have to worry about a plist.

Apparently someone on the iTunes team thinks that short version numbers might be localized at some point the future (or he/she is just too lazy to change the defaults. To that person I say, "Just buckle down and put it in the global Info.plist, numbnuts!"
