Since updating to 10.2.3 I've found that folders on the desktop, or files that I download to the desktop, keep 'hiding' themselves...

I've got a folder that I keep on the desktop for newsgroup downloads (MP3's mainly) and other stuff. Quite regularly it'll disappear, and then suddenly reappear when I look for it (using the Finder menu; File/Find...) or open a new folder on the desktop using the RH mouse button.

Anyone else suffered this, have any suggestions why, or have any remedies?

Thanks in advance.

I find files and folders that I save to the desktop don't appear until I actually click on the desktop itself, for some odd reason. Its been a bug that has been slightly fixed in Jag, under x.1 files and folders would sometimes take a while to show up on the desktop. Not much a fix per se, but a single click on your desktop should make the file show. Its annoying but its a habit that is easily formed.

Check that the items aren't simply moving around from location to location every now and then, as OSX has a habit of doing (moving items to the upper-left of the screen).

Also, verify that you have more than ~500MB free on your boot volume (and of course verify your filesystem integrity by using Disk Utility while booted from your OS X CD, or using fsck -y in single user mode if you're familiar with that method).

I lost a folder last night on the desktop and a simple "Clean up" brought it into arms reach.

My machine does the same thing when my HD has major problems. If your HD has major problems like an error in the header block or something, it can cause this same behavior. I would recommend running some disk tool or going into single user mode and using fsck -y on your drive. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for your suggestions, guys/gals.

Disk Utility First Aid repaired a few permissions and fsck found something too.

All well now!
