My office is just beginning the migration from 9 to X and we would like to have as many X naitive apps usable as possible.

We are currently using Outlook 2001 and it works well for our purposes. We have purchased MS Office X which has Entourage, but it doesn't look to be configurable to the server based e-mail at our office. The only account options are POP, IMAP, and Hotmail (same goes for the OS X Mail.app).

Essentially, we use Outlook 2001 to connect to a Microsoft Exchange server on a Windows box. I cannot seem to find any option for setting up an account in either Entourage or Mail.

Would anyone happen to be using an X naitive network mail client at their office? Or perhaps I just need some info on how to configure Entourage or Mail correctly?

Much appreciation in this matter - thanks.

Microsoft are the folks you have to deal with as far as 'full support' goes...

They 'own' the exchange protocol and they are (for the most part) the only people that can give you an X native version. Check www.macwindows.com for any/all updates on stuff dealing with MS Exchange and X many people on that site (and this site too I'm sure) are waiting for some 'official' news to break.

That being said if you can, just ask the people who run your exchange server to 'turn on imap' and then you can use just about any mail client you like (including the mail client that comes with X)... This will only help with email (calendar support still wont work) but it's a start.

Heh.

You have three choices, and none of them are pretty.

1) Outlook 2001 in Classic. It works. I've done it. But I've never used it for weeks at a time. I always go back to Outlook XP on my WinXP desktop.

2) Entourage to your Exchange server as an IMAP or POP (preferably IMAP) server. This requires your Exchange administrator to enable your mailbox for IMAP access (Right click on your account in Active Directory Users and Computers, select Properties, Exchange Advanced Tab, Mailbox Access, Protocols, I think. I'm not at work now, so I don't know for sure, but that should be close enough.) and you authenticate with domain\username\mailboxname (e.g. acmecorp\jsmith\joe.smith, but the mailbox name is unnecessary if your mailbox name is the same as your domain login name) and your password. The main shortfall of this is you don't have access to your Exchange calendar, and getting access to the GAL via LDAP can be a little tricky.

3) Outlook Web Access. Again, has to be enabled for your mailbox (same place as IMAP), and it has to be installed. With the exception of not storing a signature, and having very little control over how your text gets formatted, it's actually one of the best webmail packages I've used.

Short answer: No pretty solutions to get mail from an Exchange Server to a Mac OS X client maintaining full compatibility.

Don't we all love Microsoft?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Future versions of Exchange will support the iCalendar protocol in addition to its current support of IMAP and LDAP (although the LDAP is more a function of the Global Catalog), so, actually, Microsoft *is* making things better.

Entourage, using these protocols to communicate with Exchange Server, should be almost as functional as Outlook on Windows, with a few exceptions (Outlook Forms, non-SMTP addressing, etc.).
